I posted a discussion a few weeks back, and I’ve finally narrowed it down to either UCSD or USC. My prospective major is international relations, and the cost of the two schools is not a factor in my decision.
Anyways, I’m having a tough time deciding between these two amazing schools!
I visited both recently and I loved both campuses, although in different ways.
Here’s my dilemma:
I like USC’s prestige, internship opportunities, and alumni network better, but I feel as if UCSD’s campus and culture are more my style. I felt a really friendly vibe when I visited. I’m not sure if I would fit in at USC, since I’m not really the frat party type.
Decision day is coming, and I’m not sure which one to pick. Are UCSD’s academics good enough to justify passing over USC?
Man, USC is a great school, but I understand not being 100% with the whole party scene. Here’s the thing though, that doesn’t have to be your experience. I’m sure there are plenty of people at USC like you who like that friendly atmosphere more. So I’d go with USC, stronger academically, and you’d still probably be able to get a good feel out of the school if you wanted.
I would not say that USC is stronger academically, UCSD is one of the global leaders in both neuroscience and UCSD translational medicine – (e.g. bridging the gap between research and treatment)…so, if you are saying business, I get your point, but its sciences areas are very strong…and beautiful setting and campus to boot.
UCSD is on the same level as USC academically. The only reason USC is better known is because it has a legendary football team and school spirit. UCSD may be ranked in the 30’s now, but it was just ranked n.18 in the new Global University rankings (USC was n.50). It’s a powerhouse when it comes to research.
I think on many STEM majors UCSD is far superior than USC. But I think on arts, film, music, and maybe IR, USC probably is better. I suggest go with the school you will be most comfortable. I have a reversed situation in my household, the shy and introverted kid went to the party school and the fun loving, party animal goes to the non party school, and both love/loved their respective college education.
