Does anyone have any ideas how the clearing people off of the waitlist will be handled in case there are openings? How is it done at other universities? I'd think it's a first come first served thing (ie, taken in the order you opted on to the waitlist) but when I called admissions this am the person I spoke to said they hadn't decided on that yet (or at least she wouldn't tell me) and could be a combination of the dreaded points and when you opt onto the wait list. My son missed the cutoff by 40 points.

The reason the person you talked to wouldnt say anything is because the waitlist is brand new. In the past, they used to accept people into UCSD as a winter admit (they start 1 quarter later) and everyone who was a winter admit got in only if enough people didnt accept to accept everyone off the list.

So, in other words, to answer your questions… no one knows a thing

No one knows… or at least they pretend they don’t know. I called today but getting any kind of answers from them was like pulling teeth. I got the impression it was by points though, not the order of listing. I also asked them how many people were offered the waitlist option and the admissions officer said he didn’t know. Then I asked for a ballpark and he still said he didn’t know! There’s no way an admissions officer can’t at least guess how many people were offered waitlist.

One of my major questions was this: In the opt-in form, it says:
“If I am offered admission from the UC San Diego waitlist but have already accepted an offer of admission from another UC campus, I understand that I will be re required to withdraw the first campus Statement of Intent to Register in order to submit a positive SIR to UC San Diego. Any SIR deposit fee paid to another campus is non-refundable.”

Does this mean I have to go to UCSD if I am admitted? I couldn’t get that answer out of him either.

All that statement is saying is that you would have to withdraw your SIR from a different UC for UCSD allow you to submit your SIR here. That doesnt mean it would automatically happen, its just warning you that you would lose a SIR deposit at the other UC campus if you decided to attend UCSD instead.

if they dont, i hope its by points. i still haven’t clicked yes because i was paranoid about what lunallion was asking, but now im more eased =D
