UCSD Waitlist....

UCSD is, or was, my number one. I found out this evening that I was wait-listed. As far as I see it being wait-listed is as bad as being denied. I know that is slightly pessimistic, but I am being realistic. What I am slightly confused about is why I was not accepted. I was just last week accepted to UCSB as a Regents scholar and accepted to Davis this evening. My cumulative GPA is a 4.0 I got a 2160 on the SAT 700 - Critical Reading; 680 - Math; 760 - Writing; and have played a sport every season of every year of high school (three a year). I am in Girl Scouts and got my Gold Award (equivalent of Eagle Scout) and am extremely active in my community. Last summer I applied and was accepted to do an internship at City of Hope. I worked in the Molecular Pharmacology lab and conducted all of the testing and research on a clinical trial studying PSA levels in post-prostectomy patients. I am published for my work. I am also a member of my school's Mock Trial team, Habitat for Humanity, one of my school's Student Ambassadors, on the Governing Board for the chapter of the Science National Honor Society at my school, and will have taken 8 AP courses by the end of this year scoring 4s and above on each of the tests so far. I realize I did not score particularly well on the SAT and that my GPA is not great but why was I not scored high enough to be accepted?

I heard that they are not accepting some applicants that are overqualified. Because I know a lot of people with like 3.4 g.p.a’s, 1800 SAT’s, and almost no EC’s get accepted.

If you got accepted, the likelihood of you not attending is very high due to the great possibility of being accepted to ucla or cal. The admissions officer told me that’s why ucsd is underpopulated. I would guess that they accepted kids most likely to stay.

I got rejected with a 3.96 GPA and a 2200. I also had all 750+s on my SAT IIs and all 5s on my AP exams. I really don’t know why they are rejecting so many people with high scores and yet accepting people with much lower ones. I have been rejected from a lot of UCs already and even some CSUs… I really don’t know what I’m going to do. Only place I haven’t been rejected at from is Davis, where I got waitlisted…

What is your UC GPA?

Lol, now UC’s are accepted applicants with scores within a certain range I guess. Too high and you won’t matriculate. ****ing stupid

I don’t see that in our high school’s naviance. But UCs do take into account of hardships, etc…

i got accepted to ucsd and uc davis. but rejected from cal poly slo. 1910 sat, 4.3 gpa, but a lot of extracurriculars and leaderships positions. i was also being recruited to play a sport. anyone know when ucla decisions come out?

March 23 ^^ and I was also waitlisted to Davis. My sat scores was a 1660 and my UC gpa was a 3.9. BUT I have been editor in chief of my yearbook staff for 3 out of 4 years. I created the Human Rights Watc Student Task Force chapter at my school during my freshman year, and have been in Circle of Friends for 4 years (2 years I have been an officer), and I’ve been in NHS and Csf. I sent my personal statement to a UCLA admissions officer and she said they were inspiring and amazing. Yet I got wait listed to Davis…I’m so confused

Its not all about your stats If you wrote a great essay and jump out as a person they want! what I did was watch their videos about what they wanted in a student and tried to shape my essays in that way, so the type of person they wanted was exactly who i was. Hopefully this helps and I am sure you will get into an amazing college…Best wishes on your journey.

Your essay is a huge part of whether or not they accept you. You can be a shining star when it comes to tests and ECs, but if nothing sets you apart from the crowd, then you are just like every other dedicated honors student.

Did you apply for one of the super competitive bio majors? Standards for a few majors are way higher than their average numbers.

@icantbeliveit and @Amidda1217 I was just able to speak to the Dean of Admissions and he said he remembered my essay, I was really surprised to hear that. The admissions committee apparently called me the “Methanol girl” because of my essay. He said my essay stood out and was “exciting.” Yet in the end I was still not admitted.

Which leads me to @Waverly. I applied for the Biomedical Engineering program, for which UCSD is ranked third in the entire nation. I knew being accepted to the program was a long-shot so as my second attendance option I simply declared Biology. I was under the impression that if you are not accepted to your first choice major, they will deffer to your second choice, however it seems I may have been wrong in that assumption…

Overqualified?? Nahh sorry but i know plenty if not majority especially if youre a science major ppl here at ucsd with 4.2+ 2100+ but i admit borderline kids make it with 3.9 and 1900. sorry to hear you got waitlisted but you have really good chance of getting in though so apply the form thingy.

@Kaethe iam sorry they didnt let you in because you are highly qualified and we did eclare the same major bio medical engineering but my stats were much lower than you about a 1560 sat and a 3.9gpa unweighted and they accepted me i have no idea why if i could like give it to you i would because for some reason ucla also accepted me i didn’t even think my essay was any good at all.

@Kaethe - are you from a competitive hs? UCs review applicants in the “context of your high school”. So if there were like 20+ applicants from your hs all applying to similar major, that could have been a factor. Nothing is lost yet. You may still get in, good luck.
@Icantbelieve - I see you are OOS. UCs are looking for more OOS students and your gpa is good…congratulations.

Kaethe, keep n touch with that admissions officer, that he remembered you along with continued interest could get you off of that wait list. I’m thinking your math score was the weakness here.

I also got wait listed :/

If your UC GPA is 4.0, then this is not high for UCSD. They have rejected students with higher stats using the old point system.

After being waitlisted at Davis, Did anybody receive the email from financial aid at Davis saying: Congratulations on your acceptance. Please accept our financial aid offer and file the SIR"…???
