UCSD (winter admit) or UCD?

Should I go to UCSD as a winter admit or go to UCD in the fall?

Going to UCSD would mean that I would live off campus the whole time, while at UCD I would live on campus in the dorms for at least the first year.

Is the dorm experience necessary at all?
For those of you who has lived both on and off campus, which did you like better?
For those who have not lived in the dorms at all, what was it like? Did you feel like you were missing out by not living on campus?

Living on campus is really convenient. You can roll right out of bed and be in class in 10 minutes without having to worry about transportation. The dorm experience is nice to have but I wouldn’t say its necessary.

yeah, dorm living isn’t necessary. i lived with the same group of girls for years 1 & 2 (original freshman year suitemates), then a totally different group for years 3 - 5. while dorm living can get you started with buddies, it’s not necessary to have a good social life.

i’m in the exact same position…

it’s UCSD winter or UCD, cept my parents won’t let me go to UCSD if i don’t get housing, cuz i’d be down to go for winter. so unless i get into fall on appeal, it’s gonna be UCD for me :</p>

My parents are letting me decide. Housing is not a problem to them. I have a part time job now and I’d figure I can save enough for off campus housing til then.. I just have to find some roommates.. if I choose UCSD.

^ yah same here. I gotta find a job and other winter admits to get a place with. :/

A surprising number of 1st years do live off campus, so it’s not a big deal as long as you make the most out of student orgs (an important source of friends).

Make sure to get on the waitlist, of course.

Dorm living does have its downsides…try foot warts for one from sharing the showers, living with crazy roommates (not good crazy, but alcoholic crazy), having your buttcheeks sit in the same place 10 other people sat…uggghhhh.

If I goto UCSD I am living off campus all for years but UCSD in general > UCD. UCSD is pretty much a top tie UC school next to UCLA and UCB.

I was in the same predicament as you were a year ago. I was a winter admit and debating whether going to UCSD or UCD. I decided to take a chance and attend UCSD even if I didn’t have those perks designated for persons admitted for fall 2007. It’s frightening because you don’t have any guarantees but I think it’s worth it.

Hopefully you’ll get lucky because about two weeks after I submitted my SIR, I was bumped from winter to fall. As for housing, I got my housing contract in mid-July and had to turn it in ASAP in order to secure a spot on-campus.

What I suggest that you do is go to admit day and see if they have a winter admit workshop to meet other winter admits. It helps just in case you might need to find housing off-campus and need roommates. From the other winter admits I met there, they were bumped from winter to fall as well. I don’t know if UCSD will do this again but I would hope so.

Good luck!

I went. I didnt meet anyone. Parents were sitting in every other seat in the winter admit session. They were seriously body guards for everyone. I felt very strange alone. My parents didnt go with me.

I am now 99% for UCSD.

I think I’ll be fine. There is a service for commuter students, roommate matching, etc. La Jolla isnt that expensive.. My friend is paying 300/month for sharing a condo with 3 other people. I will try to get involved in some organization so I will have friends.. I think I will be fine. But I have to wait until next year. I just flew home and I miss it already!

I just got accepted to UCSD for winter 2010, and was wondering how it all ended up working out for all of you. I’m very scared about housing, and meeting people.

I am wondering the same thing as hopealope is!

oh man i never thought my old thread would be revived. anyways
as i posted in one of the many winter admit threads:

as a winter09 admit, i can tell you that:

bumping winter admits to start fall quarter has happened before, but it did not last year.
dont count on it.

there is probably a waitlist for fall quarter, not 100% sure, but I do know for sure that there is one for winter and spring quarters. and many winter admits did get housing for winter, its a matter of how long you can wait for it.

for those who are moving down to sd right before winter quarter and isnt doing the extension program in the fall, (waitlist last year for winter opened beginning of november) you may get offered housing out before christmas eve or after winter quarter begins.

getting involved in a frat or sorority or club really helps with meeting new people.
its that easy.

I kinda rushed winter quarter, i went to like one event and the interview  didn’t get a bid but thats okay. I could have joined a club like my roommate, who met tons of people and made many new friends but I was kinda overwhelmed with the workload already  sucks to go from a long semester to a 10week quarter. eek. Anyways its not that bad you guys, quit worrying.

Both are good schools. It’s not the end of the world whether you go to one or the other.

Just how important is one quarter to you? You can/will make friends outside of campus housing.

haha Oyama, this thread was started a year ago. When I was deciding whether or not to take UCSD’s offer of winter 2009, which we are all currently finishing up.

i think the new winter admittees just wanna know what happened to me.

So would you recommend coming in as a winter admit?
I also got accepted to UCI as a bio major, and SD put be as undeclared becaused the human bio major was impacted. Im having a tough time deciding which experience would be best for me, UCI living on campus, or UCSD most likely living off campus. and i was wondering how being an undeclared major ad SD would affect me, because im on the pre-med track

Yes, if UCSD is your first choice or at the top of your list. If you wanna go here, one quarter is really no big deal.

no no, i think its more like a 50% chance you’ll being living off campus. just get on the waitlist early or be patient enough to wait even after winter quarter starts, there will definitely be openings for on campus housing.

I dont think being undeclared will affect you at any school, but wanting to go premed, you’ll probably want to declare a bio major… and its gonna be tough to prove to the dept to let you in.

it might be easier for you at Irvine since you wont have housing nor bio-major related problems. you’d have housing and have your choice of major.

search the forum for more about getting into the impacted bio major, im a polisci major so i dont really know anything about that. sorry.

hopealope i am in the SAME exact situation, except a few minor differences.

I have to check my fin. aid from UCI first.
And I was accepted to Paul merage school of biz for UCI, does that mean I can transfer to any other major since business admin. is impacted? (UCI)

hopealope, how did you get accepted for winter 2010 already??? i thought applications were around july, right??? im trying to go to a uc for winter 2010, dont tell me some applications are already due!!

@theydidntnameme: noo, we applied for fall 09, but they gave us winter 2010
regular winter application doesnt start till later :]
