...is what this school needs, and I think it'd be worth starting up such an ensemble.
For those of you unaware, WP is essentially marching band but without the winds and indoors. The instrumentation is generally Snares, Tenors, Bass Drums, Cymbals, and the Pit (Xylo, Marima, Vibes, Glock, Keyboard, Auxiliary, etc.).
(and no, I was not in this show)

WG, on the other hand, is like Guard from marching band, but without everything else (lol).
Sure, instruments and funding would be difficult to come by, but I say it's possible.

What would this group be able to do better than the existing marching band? Would you view them as competition, try to lure some of their existing members over? And what would you be able to provide that the existing group can’t, if their wind instruments just sat out for a few pieces?

Well, for one, UCSD does not have a marching band, but rather a “pep band.” Therefore, one major different aspect would be the, of course, marching.
I cannot think of any sense in which the current pep band would be viewed as competition, mainly considering the fact that they would be two entirely different ensembles with entirely different instrumentations.
Finally, I would not be able to provide anything, per se. However, if we were able to form a winter percussion ensemble, it would provide people the opportunity to march without actually being in a marching band. It would possess very different performing aspects from that of the pep band - playing for sports games vs playing for an audience dedicated to that performance.

I was captain of my high school winter guard, and I miss it SO much. SDSU’s winterguard was really inviting and wonderful, but it’s just too far to travel for rehearsals every week.

Also a flute player, by the way.
If there are any other guard people around here, let me know and I’d love to get together and spin :]

Hi! I’m a first year in ERC. I also did guard for six years and I always wanted to join guard in college. I did percussion in eighth grade and that was an amazing experience. I know San Diego has its independent world guard Lealta, but I missed their try-outs. I was disappointed when I found out UCSD only had a pep-bound, so instead I joined a non-competitive hip-hop dance team. If you’re still up for the offer, I would love to get together and spin. =]
