ucsd with chem

So I'm trying to get into UCSD with a chemistry major. I have my IGETC done, so I will be applying with the TAG agreement. Can I still get into that school if I have 3 physics classes, 3 math classes, and organic chem left? Or should I change my major? I'm also doing a lot of pre-medicinal courses along with that, plus all my GE's. What are my chances?

thats quite a bit of pre reqs missing, but you should still apply as a chem major since you get to pick a 2nd choice major when you apply.

i haven’t done a lot of the pre-reqs…actually i think i’m still in the same boat as you. i applied to ucsd with TAG as a biochem major and i was accepted  my igetc was completed by the end of spring and i’ll be attending there this fall~ so!

sugary, so you didn’t get a lot of your pre-reqs done, but then what was your gpa that you were admitted with? i thought all sorts of biology majors were impacted, and you have to have a different process to be admitted. but yay! thats pretty exciting! what would be a good second choice major for my application, since ive really just been focusing on chem and igetc?

Umm, pretty low; like 3.03  Then it dropped to 2.98 x.x I managed to bring it to 3.08 by the end of spring quarter.

But for TAG as long as you have a 3.0 or over you should be fine.

I’m not sure because Biochemistry/Chemistry isn’t impacted at UCSD so I might have had an easier chance. I don’t know if Chemistry is impacted, but I do know Biology is ^^; A good second major would probably be Biochemistry/Chemistry (It’s actually just a bunch of chemistry, the only biochem courses are upper divs, which you would take at UCSD…no biology at all oddly enough)

yea the major im applying with is biochemistry/chemistry: molecular synthesis. i guess biochemistry and chem are intertwined somehow. I know its not impacted so I’m happy about that, but I heard that because I don’t have some of my prereqs done, that I have less of a chance to get in :frowning: , what level math did you finish before you transferred? did you do any physics or organic chem?

Nope, I just finished all of my general chem series. I’m starting physics and organic chemistry this fall at UCSD. I finished only the first calculus class (I’m not that good at math u_u; ).

And yeah, I think for the biochem that’s more bio-related, less pre-reqs would equal a lower chance since bio is impacted :(

OH WOW! we are in exactly the same boat then. LITERALLY. im only going to finish my first calculus class. I’ll only be completing my 2 semesters of college chem. AND ill be starting my physics and organic chem only once i transfer! And I’m going to finish my IGETC this semester. What major did you apply as, since when i look on Assist, theres like Biochemistry/Chemistry: and then therebis like a bunch of branches like just chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, etc etc… what was yours?

You guys are lucky. Your majors are not impacted at UCSD. Mine is. Mechanical Engineering. I also got 3.0 but I am only behind 1 chem and 1 phys classes.
Pondering whether I should I apply for TAG this Fall or not.

Do you guys know when they tell you that you get accepted.

I actually don’t want to do the November application if I know I am not going to get accepted.

1 chem and a physics? I definetly think you should still apply! Even though it is impacted, they could still see that you only have those to left, and you will finish it that first semester at UCSD anyways. Plus, at UCSD, you have the option to apply for a second choice major, which would prob maybe be in the sciences area or another engineering or something, then once you get in, I think you have that first year once you transfer to petition and change your major. I’ve heard of a few people who’ve done that actually. And they tell you when you get accepted in mid march to April, accorted to the admission timeline online. You might as well apply for the TAG. it is pretty useless to stay at a CC a whole other year just for those two courses. So you should apply with tag, and they will probably see that you were also focusing on general ed courses too. Hope I helped. It’s just my opinion.

@Ktran13 They notify you if you get accepted the same time they notify everyone else. I think it’s like in April or May? I forgot. You should apply for and do TAG this fall  You have nothing left to lose right? Might as well try.

@yepitstina I originally got in with just Biochemistry/Chemistry but I switched over to Pharmaceutical Chemistry :)

Oh thats cool. How did you switch over to pharmaceutical chemistry?

You have the enroll in classes before you can switch :)

ohh okay! well thanks sooo much! you have been sooo helpful!!!
