is it just because I live in northern california, or is UCSD rarely talked about? I RARELY hear any conversation about UCSD, and this is despite the fact that my high school has a very, very high percentage of students who attend UCs.

UCSD ranked high, so why doesn't it seem prestigious? I've never heard of anyone calling UCSD they're dream school. Is there some truth in that its commpletely ounderrated/unpopular in comparison to its rankings, or is it just because I live in norcal...?

yes you are right. But one day you will see UCSD on the Maury Povich show featuring guests who went from geek to sheek. She will don a new wardrobe accentuating her curvaceous and bodacious figure. All da mens will croon a plaintive anthem and swoon at what could've been.

UCSD is actually overrated. It's built a reputation for itself quickly in its few years of existence, but that mainly pertains to the sciences and math. For those majors it is a surprisingly good school, I believe.

a lot of bio majors consider it a dream school. ... i had a few friends who turned down UCB and UCLA for UCSDs biology program.

don't provide housing, which is a major concern. Social atmosphere is boring. But their bios are outstanding.

i wish i wre wrong! it seems like it would have the perfect atmosphere....it SEEMS as if it would be anyone's dream school...the location, the beach, ranked high, etc....

it could have been an amazing place..if it had housing and all the other good stuff.

thats too bad

its not THAT bad, i live like 3 miles away , the beach is very nice.

theres a girl who turned down Berkeley LA and SC for UCSB at my school
why? I dont know

She must want to spend a lot of time partying.

^ sarcasm?

ucsd has no party life

Malishka, I was responding to this:

yea i think so hahahaha

nevermind, i though it said UCSD. sorry

Is UCSD really that bad? I'm considerin going there, or UCSB for E.E.

It's not that it's "that bad"; it's that it isn't "that good." It doesn't really belong in every discussion about UCLA and UCB, for instance.

i just think that every college has its own strong programs
like ucsd is good for econ and bio..... according to ranks

Colleges like UCLA and Berkeley are good for everything; colleges like UCSD are only good in a few distinct areas.

I don't know. UCLA has a great name, but I've been hearing some awful things about their Bio program such as the facilities being outdated and run down looking. I hope someone can come here and tell me I'm wrong as I really do hope I am. UCLA's campus is so nice and I only hope their bio/chemistry departmental area is just as nice.

Frankly, reputation matters. Throughout the country, and even in California, UCSD is just not in the same category as UCLA and UCB. But prospective college applicants often forget that. Regardless, I think UCSD is overrated for their programs, as overall, the atmosphere there and other general factors, weaken it. The strength of a department is not as important for undergrads.

I agree with Gabe to above. And to a lot of random things on these boards...ahaha.
