I asked for substance free…will that increase my chance of getting a single? (that’s not why I chose substance-free )

I dont care about location, floor, building, I just want a single.

I asked for substance free…will that increase my chance of getting a single? (that’s not why I chose substance-free )

I dont care about location, floor, building, I just want a single.

Yeah I’d prefer a nice view and all, but wouldn’t we all? Haha I’ll take a single anywhere. I got one for summer.

@totaldj - The lady on the phone I spoke with when I was doing my room selection told me that all the singles are full right now and that she will put me on the waitlist and that there were already like 15 people on it or something.

@ciba - Yeah the room looks nice and big from the floorplan view right? That’s why I chose it and I chose the highest floor because I don’t want to hear people above me being loud/noisy and stuff (from what I’ve experienced living in a 5 story building at La Jolla Crossroads which is where I stay at now). We can always change the beds around and stuff too if we want. I think I’m going to be bringing in my TV also that has an HDMI so we can watch movies and stuff haha. But yeah I hope you get a single! I’m still on the waitlist but I agreed to a double for now. Hopefully we can be in the same apartment floor/plan though even if you get a single! :D

Super exciteddd

all i want is to live in either EAST or WEST tower (building 1) i put substance-free , did that decrease my chances?

I submitted the contract like 7pm yesterday OMG. am I screwed lol :(( they sent out the email like 6pm…

haha yeah I sent mine in late, sent it in the evening and I got the email at 10am…soo yeahh, we shall see.
In my opinion I think you’d have a better chance getting a single checking substance free, as long as you are really ok with that. You’ll just be competing with other substance free students, which I’m guessing won’t be too many ppl?

My friend who transferred to UCSD and at the Village said:
“yeah it’s almost impossible to get a single if you’re living in the village. the people who have priority now are having trouble finding singles too. i think they put you on a waitlist and you just wait til someone drops. double’s not bad, just try to get someone clean”

@nuvydeep Cool, sounds good! I do prefer the higher floors too so that’s good Yeah so I have low expectations for a single, but it’s okay.

Well today they sent me an email saying my payment account number was wrong (darn e-check system), I called but they said I had to wait for an email with instructions to fix it. So I’ll probably get bumped to the very back of the line for room choice. Oh well. :)

who cares if it’s a single or not really…as long as you get a chill roommate it’s all good.

Well I got into my room but everyone was moving out and it was a gigantic cluster**** with all the cars. I’ll try again tomorrow.

how do you like it so far, grimes? pros/cons so far?

I was in there for all of 2 minutes. I got my key, checked out my room and left. Didn’t actually move anything in.

Now for that 2 minute review…

It’s definitely not going to be confused with a luxury apartment, that’s for sure. Right now I live in a $600,000 5 bedroom house built in 2005 on a hill where I can see the ocean on most days. The Village is about as bare bones as it gets. Metal doors, commercial carpet, etc. The one downside that I noticed right off the bat was how small the “living room” is. It’s small… really small and the couches suck. My room has a bed, one of those standalone closet things (it’s like an external closet, if that makes sense) a crappy plastic table and a crappy plastic chair. That’s it.

I seem to remember the Village West room I toured last year to be nicer, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, I don’t expect Village to be luxurious, and the only two reasons I really want to be there are to get more of the “college” experience and to walk to class rather than having to take transit. We’ll see how it goes this summer, and if it sucks I’ll bail by the time fall starts. Also, if I don’t get a single when they call Monday I’m absolutely going to find my own place for the fall.

Since I had so much time when I left, I stopped by an apartment complex just south of campus (.91 miles) that only does one bedrooms and it was nice. I did a tour of the model. It’s $1,300, but 650 sq. ft. If Village doesn’t work out/I don’t get a single/I’m not feeling it, I’ll probably get one of those apartments. I liked them because it was quiet and you’re literally 50 yards from the full La Jolla Square shopping complex (movie theater, Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, etc.)

More to come as I get moved in and mingle. I’m not even sure if there’s anyone in my apartment right now. It seemed empty save for a TV that was unplugged and looked to be on its way out and a bunch of food in the cupboards.

@ciba29
I don’t think it is easier to get a single if we ask for substance free. Cuz if I remember correctly, only 2 floors of the West Tower is substance free last year.

@Grimes99: Thanks for posting about your Village experience thus far. that’s some valuable info and I too would be deterred if those circumstances keep up through the beginning of fall quarter. Now as to that alternative 650 sq ft 1300 near UTC, where is that exactly? If you don’t mind can you give the name of the Apartment Complex and any complexes nearby to it? I like you am looking for a single studio/1 bed-room …I think my budget is less than yours though…know of anything less than 1300?

Also what’s the walking distance to classes from this area, as well as shuttle time? (if you happen to know it)

@grimes99 We must’ve been on each others tails today. I tried to tour The Village today around 1:30-ish, but because everyone was moving out and I still don’t have my Summer room assignment they wouldn’t let me in. When I was in the office I heard someone ask if they could get their key early… was that you? If so, do you remember a girl covered in sweat (middle of hypoglycemic episode) fidgeting on the green bench? Long shot, but that was me.

I toured Village Square as well. I really liked the triangle configuration even though the floor plans looked odd when I viewed them online. I continued to Mirada, International Gardens, and La Scala. Most impressed by Village Square and Int Gardens. Tomorrow I’m gonna make rounds to apartments further from campus. Have you stopped your hunt?

Also, how long did it take for you to get your Summer room assignment after signing the contract and paying the $300?

Thanks in advance =]

@Veritas Seems $1000 is the bottom line if you wanna stay within 8 minutes of campus. Here are some prices of complexes close by for either studios or one bedrooms:

Archstone UTC - 1000
Canyon Park - 1000
Torrey Pines Village - 1100 (not UCSD, this is a different complex)
La Scala - 1140
La Jolla Canyon - 1150
Costa Verde Village - 1155
La Jolla Nobel - 1170
Pacific Gardens - 1175

@Veritas: Yeah take what I say now as extremely preliminary because I haven’t met anyone yet and it was chaotic with all the people trying to move out today. I drove around for 30 minutes just trying to find a place to park. It looked like people were fleeing the incoming apocalypse.

The apartment complex I checked out today was called “Village Square” and their website is : [La Jolla California Apartments - Home - Village Square Apartments](http://www.villagesquarelajolla.com/)

They only do one bedrooms and “junior” one bedrooms starting at around $1,200 I believe. The “junior” one bedrooms are kinda a hybrid between a studio and a one bedroom and they’re about 550 sq ft. I only toured the full one bedroom, but it was pretty nice. The complex itself is in good shape, but is basically bare-bones as far as amenities go. No pool, gym, etc. (but I’m next to the beach and have a very nice gym at UCSD, so that doesn’t really bother me.) But the lady who gave me the tour said it’s a quiet complex and they don’t tolerate parties or anything, which is more what I’m looking for. She said they’re fine with you having people over and playing music, but basically not acting like frat kids.

It’s literally right next to the major shopping center of the area, and there’s a UCSD shuttle stop just down the street. You could probably ride your bike to campus, but it would be about a mile and a half to the lecture halls.

[8683 Via Mallorca - Google Maps](Google Maps)

Is the link to the google map (not sure that works.) As you can see, it’s pretty close to campus.

I looked through almost every one bedroom apartment in the area listed on the UCSD off campus apartment PDF (http://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu/media/apartmentmap08_front.pdf) and I settled on this one because everything else either had terrible reviews (and wasn’t much less expensive) or was 2.5+ miles away. This one has great reviews and is really close. I don’t remember seeing anything drastically lower than $1,300. The La Jolla International Gardens complex was cheaper, but had really bad reviews. Multiple reviews cited the “paper thin” walls and said you can hear ev-er-y-thing.

The shuttle time is probably about 5 minutes, if that. I was on I-5 in less than 5 minutes going past UCSD. Walking is probably 20-30 I would guess.

@Acancrondrea: Haha nope, I don’t recall seeing you. I just came in and said I was moving in and needed my key.

The triangle thing weirded me out as well, but it was nice when I finally got inside and she mentioned that you only share one wall with another unit due to the shape. I’d rather have one common wall than 3. I might look at another apartment complex, but it really all depends on how much I like Village and whether or not I get a single on Monday. If I don’t get a single, that makes things much easier.

I think it took about a month to get my room assignment from when I paid my $300 deposit, but I applied super early. You’ll get yours fairly soon, I’m sure. The only reason I’m actually in right now is because I paid for the early move in date.

@dominicfhk Oh okay, sorry I was wrong then! I apologize to whoever asked about substance free possibilities and singles.

@Grimes99: Thanks so much for the link, I’m digging Village Square and think I’ll schedule a tour as well come orientation time. Questions if you don’t mind: 1. Do you think the rate will go up starting in September, given that there will be more demand by then? 2. How is the parking at Village Square? Would residents be GUARANTEED parking spots (at no cost)? This is a must…I don’t wanna put up with any bull5h!t at midnight before an exam. Vehicle safety is also a must…needs to be safe from any illegal immigrants who recently jumped the border and immediately need a car/truck, if you know what I mean. Are there parking garages?

Btw, now that i think of it, why don’t you personally settle for a studio as opposed to a 1-bedroom? You’d save money (it all adds up, especially monthly x 12) especially given you’re paying for all of your tuition on your own and for (summer session). 520 sq ft is PLENTY of room+personal space! Just a suggestion though.

@Veritas18: You’re welcome! I doubt the rate will go up since it’s not exactly priced for students anyway.

The parking seemed fine to me. No garages, just a strip of parking spaces like most apartments. Yes, you’re guaranteed parking. If you Google earth it, you can see that it’s literally sharing an entrance with that gigantic shopping center that has tons of parking. Heck, when I visited I parked in the Ralphs parking lot and walked 30 yards to the complex. I would assume the security is relative to the area, and La Jolla is pretty safe as a whole. I have a pretty nice car as well and don’t really want to deal with it getting stolen, but I didn’t get the feeling that it was a bad area. You can see the UCSD buildings from where it’s at.

I probably could do a junior (studio) but they only had a one bedroom model available. In all honesty, the extra $100-200 a month isn’t a big deal for me, so if a one bedroom is all that’s available I’ll probably just grab that. But if there are studios open in September, I’ll take a look. I’m not opposed to them, I just didn’t really care all that much either way and they didn’t have one to tour.
