There is a lot of uncertainty in the health industry, which is largely due to the ACA. UCSF released an article stating that 40% of its budget is supported by the federal government abd because that funding source is diminishing, their focus is on private donations.

Do you think now is the time for these two entities to finally merge. Will this allow them to gain more private funding? What about an entire rebranding effort calling themselves "The University of California".

I didn't go to Cal but I am curious on everyone's thoughts.

Why do you think the merger will help? I doubt that UCSF want to lose it’s autonomy. It’s not in financial disaster. It could increase tuition if it needs to. It would be hard for UCB to increase tuition.

It’s hard to say if a merger would help donations and funding.
There is possible savings in the way of less administrative costs, etc.

There was talk awhile back with Stanford medical and UCSF merging and hospital operations were shared in the past:

UCSF has historic roots with the Berkeley campus. As the sciences and engineering continue to merge with health into more interdisciplinary studies there may be more collaboration between the campuses than there already is…for example QB3:
