UD to close Rodney and Dickinson

New article today in UD Daily, Rodney and Dickinson to close in May 2015, eliminating the entire West Campus.

My S just discovered Rodney dining hall this year, it's closest to the business department buildings.

The following from the article would also be of interest to students/applicants:

Construction is nearing completion for a new Academy Street Dining and Residence Hall Complex (ASDR) and renovated Harrington Complex, both set to open in fall 2015, providing uninterrupted housing for freshmen. ASDR will feature a large lounge area designed similar to Dickinson’s, plus a 50,000-square-foot dining hall able to seat 1,180 diners, one of the largest dining halls on the East Coast, according to current plans. This dining hall will be available to all students on campus with a meal plan. Harrington will have updated finishes in the residential spaces and a revitalized commons with a fitness area, P.O.D. Market, several lounges, quiet and group study space and air conditioning.

this is sad and exciting at the same time. Wish I had a 3rd child to send to UD to experience the new freshmen dorm living! My D said there was a mixture of sadness on campus yesterday… sad the old dorms were closing down where many had their favorite memories at UD and sad/jealous they didn’t get to be in the new dorms! lol… I’m guessing admissions this year and next will get even tighter given housing was one of the few downfalls UD had for some kids. I can’t wait to see the completed project!

I also was somewhat surprised when I got a text yesterday from our D, who now lives in Miami, expressing the same mixed feelings. She is a “Rodjects” alumnus who graduated from UD in 2010 and just obtained her MSN-FNP degree from the Univ. of Miami. I was surprised she even knew about it. I guess the word is being spread by alumni as well. At least all the major freshman dorm complexes, except for Russell, will be air conditioned beginning next year. Makes one want to apply to UD as a freshman.

As a prospective student and parents touring this past Wednesday, I will say we were notably impressed with the new housing projects. Our tour visited an older dorm next to the new Academy St complex and it was extremely nice too! We had spent significant time on the UD website, but were so impressed with a “real life” experience. What a beautiful and comfortable campus!

This is really great news. My DD lived in Rodney her freshman year (2010-2011) and it was disgusting. She was sick the entire year. Living on Laird Campus after that (TMK and Ind) felt like an upscale hotel in comparison. Happy for the incoming students!
