What is the reputation of the engineering program at Udel?

Chem Engineering is fantastic–top 10 in the country. I don’t know about the others, but I believe they’re pretty good overall.

Keep in mind that DuPont and AstraZeneca in Delaware is a big plus for internships etc.

Our Son is in Udel mechanical and is doing so well. Graduates have gotten nice jobs, and htat counts! Undergrad engineering is pretty straightforward, not much of a difference between schools and programs. We are going through the same process with our H.S. senior and every open house we have attended we get told pretty much the same thing. With a few weeks to go till decision time it’s down to Udel or UB, with Penn State as distant 3rd.

I agree with the comments above, with one exception. If you wish to take an aerospace concentration in mechanical engineering, don’t go to UD. This program is being phased out.

The engineering program here is very good. I’m pretty sure Princeton Review even ranked it 10th in the nation at one point. If you’re looking for Chemical Engineering then UD is definitely one of the best options around. Our other engineering disciplines have pretty solid foundations too. I’m currently a freshman Mechanical Engineering major (Minor in Biomedical Engineering) and I’ve been offered 6 paid internships already. Although UD may not be MIT, it certainly does a lot of work in helping you get a job. The school has a lot of great connections (mostly made through Chem. Eng. lol).

@ Mattmoosemom, According to an email response to my inquiry from the head of the ME department, Dr. Anette M.Karlsson, the aero concentration is not being phased out. Likewise the head of the AFROTC program said he’s not aware of it being phased out. But, looking at the research areas listed on the web site makes me think there might be some truth - no aero topics mentioned. My D is a jr and mildly interested in UD so we’ll be watching closely.

Well, I really wish that were true, but I believe they are telling you what you want to hear. I will PM with more details.

I should really clarify regarding aerospace. Technically the concentration does exist. However, there are fewer course options now than in the past, and some professors with that expertise have left. They seem to be focusing more on wind turbine technology now, which actually may be a more timely alternative. They even have a Sustainable Energy Technology concentration. But if you are sure you want lots of choices in dedicated aerospace courses, I would recommend you look at other universities.
