I recommend looking into Roger Williams maybe as a safety. It has good merit scholarship offerings, is on the Northeast coast, and has a strong marine bio department
@TheDidactic I have gotten accepted to every school, just waiting to hear back from Northeastern. I know I wouldn’t be rowing around in Boston Harbor haha but they have co-op where you have actual experience in the career and another program where you spend a year doing field work, so they do have more availability to opportunities like that than UDel. Of course, UDel has Semester by the Sea at their marine science center. I guess at this point I should be paying attention to when you can dive into the major since you are pretty much taking all the required classes at first.
@couplemoreweeks hi! I actually applied there and spoke with a professor there, but I decided it wasn’t for me. I’m into more of a bigger school. But thanks for your feedback!
Folks, URI marine science departments are considered among the best and compare well with Washington, Oregon State, South Carolina, all very strong programs. URI may not have the same assets as MIT-Woods Hole or UC San Diego Scripps, but URI probably has the best marine science program in the northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
@LakeWashington I have to agree with the strength in their marine science program. Like I said, I was worried about their reputation at first, but after speaking with a professor and student there, I discovered their program in marine bio is strong.
A friend’s son attends UD in the marine science program. The main campus is approx. 1 hour 20 minutes form the beach and I know he spent a semester at the satellite facility on the shore. He also spent a semester in the Cayman Islands. He feels as though he has gotten a lot of great hands on experience. UDs science programs are excellent and the campus is so beautiful, with such a great main street going right through it. He has really enjoyed his time at UD.
@mamag2855 thanks so much! That’s reassuring because I’ve been concerned about the strength of the program, especially since I really like the school! Do you know if he has ever taken trips to do field experience through his classes? Or was it pretty much just through those two semester programs?
@jag123 What did you decide? I’m so glad I’ve been blissfully ignorant as to the bad reputation of URI these last 20 years. I thought the marine science program was top notch when I went and I never lived ‘down the line’ near the beach. You certainly can stay on campus.
@gearmom the marine bio program at URI is top notch, and that is why it is one of my top choices. I still haven’t made my decision…final decisions must be in by May 1st.
