Going for business, UMD has a much better business program but Delaware is about $4000 less expensive. I live in NJ, distance is not a factor though. I like both campuses but probably like Maryland's better.

Cons of UDel:
-not as highly ranked as Maryland
-Business program not as good

Cons of UMD:
-more expensive than Delaware
-heard there is a lot of crime
-really big

I am looking for any opinions on which is a better overall choice.

Thanks!!!!!

it kind of seems like you like UMD more and that the only reason you are considering Udel is because its cheaper.

Tough choice! My D would have had to make the same decision except that UMD made it for her (Spring 2011 admission only!).

Things to consider:

Does that $4k/yr difference matter to you and your family? Doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you are already taking out significant loans, it would matter.

Is it UMD’s undergrad biz that is rated highly or their grad school?

Are you the kind of person who will seek out individual guidance and make personal contacts with professors at a huge school or are you the kind who may get lost in it?

Can you hurry up and spend a night at each this week? Maybe you can get a better feel?

You can always go to UDEL undergrad and then go to UMD for business school (I have a friend at the biz school now - I don’t think it’s in College Park).

Just my two cents. Good luck. You have two great choices!

Were you accepted into either honors program?

no I wasn’t accepted into an honors program

were you accepted into the Robert Smith business school at U of MD already, or are you in letters and sciences and you will matriculate to the b-school if you get the grades?

i was accepted to the Smith School

I think that’s a plus…it is quite competetive. It would be really tough to have to worry about getting accepted into it later.

My daughter still chose UD over UMCP (in state tuition for MD - so the price difference for us is large). She was admitted into a limited enrollment program (which Smith probably is also) for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. U Del’s program is nice, but I think it is less competetive the UMCP. This did not matter to her.

However, my D did get into the Honors prog at UD, not MD. She is very happy with her choice. She never connected with UM, it was vast to her. She has probably visited MD 4 times and is still happy to be at UD. She felt her quality of life would be better at UD based on the honors program and the campus’ feel to her. Quality of life we figured would translate to happiness and high grades. So far, so good.

Where will you perform best? Grades matter. If you like bigger sports, UM may be for you. Proximity to DC is a plus also. Crime is not great in College Park - that was a factor in her decision.

Good luck - let us know what you decide.
