I've been admitted to the undergraduate class at UDel (OOS) and my intended major is Biological Sciences. I may be switching to Genetics, but I'm not sure yet. Anyway, I REALLY need advice about the bio program at UDel. I absolutely love the school, but I haven't really heard much about the bio department. I mostly hear about the chemical engineering....

So is UDel a good school to go to if you plan on doing undergraduate research in bio? Will it get me into a good graduate school? I've also been accepted to Rutgers SAS and SEBS, as well as UWis-Madison...but Madison is too expensive for me to attend, as of now. Rutgers is in-state...is their bio program more recognized than UDel's??

Any input would be greatly appreciated...I'm trying to make a decision ASAP. Thanks everyone : )

Both Rutgers and UD are Major Research Universities but RU-NB is larger (almost twice the size of UD by number of undergraduate students). Both have excellent Biological Science Departments with undergraduate research programs. UD has been cited for the excellence of its overall undergraduate research programs. If you put any creedence in ratings/rankings I don’t believe that there is a significant difference between the two schools. If you do well in either school you will not have any problem in getting into a good/excellent Graduate School. If you have not done so already I would check out the web sites of the two schools regarding their Biological Science Departments and Undergraduate Research Programs. Rutgers has a very large school feel to it while UD, a large school, has a much smaller feel to it. UD is in the process of a major buliding expansion in the areas of the sciences/engineering to increase its research activities. I’m sorry to not really be of much help to you in your decision but perhaps you might need to look at some other factors to help you decide between the schools. Which school do you feel you “fit in” best with - don’t look just at academics. I am a Biological Sciences grad from Rutgers College and My D just graduated from UD (BSN) last summer. Both schools are excellent.

Thank you! And you were a great help, actually. If they really are similar in academics, then it’s a lot easier for me to choose the school where I think I’ll be happier, instead of which school I think will give me a better education. Again, thanks so much!
