@Trisherella Thanks for all the sound advice on the CC boards.

Just curious – where are you (or S/D) thinking of going next year? I’ve seen you most on the Florida college CC boards. S looks like he’s headed to UCF (Burnett) but still waiting to hear from U of F and Va. Tech. (He’s already decided not to go to Texas A&M, GMU, and NC State.)

Did your APP status pages disappear as well?

@mdchang99 mine looks the same

@soyunchico yeah it just came back on… they were probably updating the site

Beachgirl, I like your stats and I like your essay topic. Your ECs look stellar too. (particularly the restaurant angle. You must be a people person!) I think you have a strong chance to get in.

VABogart, are you Virginia residents? Congrats on UCF/Burnett! UCF was one of those schools that was much more impressive in person than what I imagined in my head. They seem to be getting stronger every year! My son has gotten into FSU (waiting on honors decision), UCF, USF and is waiting on UF. He’s also applied to several privates both in and out of state. As I mentioned in the FSU thread, we had a great visit there (I had gone there determined not to like it and was confident we were going to rule it out, lol!), a “pretty good” visit at UF, and another strong visit at UCF. He’s going to attend some accepted students days before deciding.

MDchange, you look like a Sure Thing for UF. However, with all the rest of your options being Lottery Schools, do you have a Sure Sure Thing, i,e. safety, just in case? Although it’s unlikely that you would be turned down at UF, weird things sometimes happen in the admissions process. I’d feel safer with a Safety Safety.

@Trisherella I got into FIU a few weeks ago! It was my most awesome college experience thus far :smiley:

@Trisherella . . . we never visited FSU, thinking if we were going to drive all the way to Tallahassee we might as well keep on trucking to Tuscaloosa. :stuck_out_tongue: Let me know what happens if your child ends up there! Many kids from my older son’s class went to FSU and seemed to love it.

@Trisherella We’re from Vienna, VA (Northern Virginia). S has applied to George Mason University in Fairfax and Virginia Tech. He’s been accepted to GMU (with an unexpected partial tuition scholarship) but it’s only 20 minutes away from home. S wants to be much farther away. (Can’t blame him!) He loves Florida, so I think he’ll be UCF-bound, but who knows? If U of F accepts him, then dangles a scholarship, anything can happen. By the end of this month, he’ll likely have his mind made up. All the best to your S!

@VABogart - why not VT? If we were in-state my son probably would have gone there, due to family, though he loves UF (and we are in-state so it makes the most sense on a number of levels).

My extended family are die-hard VTers!

ETA: I know my son would not choose VT over UF now though. He’s become a Gator through and through.

@SouthFloridaMom9 Good question. S loves Florida, and wants to get a job there as a Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineer when he graduates. VT is a great engineering school (I’m a University of Virginia alum myself – both undergrad and law school – but VT has UVA beat on engineering), but S doesn’t feel as inclined to go there. He wants to go somewhere sunny and warm and where there’s more action than Blacksburg, VA. He also likes the fact that there’s a very large research park next to UCF and he’s been admitted to the Burnett Honors College. And – UCF gave him a $44,000 scholarship, which makes it about the same as VT in terms of cost. But we’ll see. Still waiting for next Friday the 10th at 6:00 p.m. . . .

VABogart, we have the same issue with a school being “too close” to home, a private only 15 minutes away gave our son a big scholarship, and we said no problem you could dorm there, but he wants to be someplace new. BTW he spent a week at a golf camp at UVA this past summer, wow, what a GORGEOUS campus. And we enjoyed spending a weekend in Charlottesville before we dropped him off, seemed like a great area, at least what we saw. Even the run down areas were “quaintly” run down, lol!

Although my husband I are northerners, we’re really glad to be out of the cold and living in Florida. In fact a lot of my northern friends will try to claim that they could never “take” the Florida heat…my goodness, everyplace is air conditioned down here. I think my summers up north were hotter because we didn’t have air! Really 95 percent of the time the weather is great. I think your son would like it if he decides to come down. That’s a terrific scholarship, too!

Everybody waiting on UF for now…good luck to all!

@VABogart . . . grrrr UVA is a bad word at my sister’s house. :stuck_out_tongue:

Totally understand on VT - makes sense. I think it will be tough to beat the UCF deal. That being said, my son’s roommate at UF is in aerospace and it seems like a good program. UF has a very good engineering school, and they recently received a significant donation from Herbert Wertheim.

UCF would be the next choice in Florida for engineering. We sort of blew it not applying there. It was a good thing, in hindsight, that DS was accepted to UF (which surprised me at the time because he homeschooled and UF is the toughest Florida school for homeschoolers to get into probably).

DS got accepted in the ‘first wave’ last year at VT and it was a thrilling day at our house! Unfortunately it was hard to justify the cost.

PS: We love UF’s new president, Dr. Kent Fuchs. He is the coolest guy, as silly as that sounds. Engineering person himself, so you get the feeling he has a soft spot for the engineering college. He came from Cornell (?). President Obama appointed him to the National Science Council. He does a great job, imho, representing the university and wants to raise UF even higher.

@SouthFloridaMom9 We toured University of Florida last spring break and loved it. I think U of F has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country (Stanford and Princeton have the most beautiful, IMO). I’d be thrilled if S went to U of F for engineering, but the financial deal at UCF (and VT and GMU, for that matter) makes it hard to pass it up. While visiting U of F, S got to speak with two U of F engineering students for 45 minutes, and even one of the deans came in during the interview session to join the conversation. Waiting for next Friday’s decisions. OK, coffee time. ~O)

5 more days!!! Good luck yall!

Does anyone know anything about internship opportunities at UF? Because Gainesville isn’t exactly a big city… I’m between UF(if I get in) and USF… I know Tampa has a lot of opportunities so I’m leaning towards USF…
