My son got admit in both UF and FSU Computer Science major (in addition to few other universities in other states). My brother stays in Tallahassee. Hence exploring the option of Florida state
I want to know whether FSU is worth considering (as we are hearing varied views)? I want to know about prospects of computer science major of FSU and UF
Dear All,
Please read the subject as Class 2022 and 2012 was a typo error
Both schools have very good computer science programs, with UF maybe having a slight edge due to their STEM programs in general. If you have family in Tallahassee though, I definitely think that FSU is worth considering. You should consider touring both schools and seeing which ones you feel most home at.
@2brute: Thank you for the response
UF CS is very very strong. If it’s affordable and your son has some cs background, that’s what I’d pick due to unique opportunities through oncampus recruiting.
FSU’s program is good and your son won’t have trouble finding a job later so if UF is not affordable it’s a backup most students would be very, very happy to have.
@MYOS1634 : We are looking at the academics part. So your opinion on UF CS shall be taken into consideration. In fact my elder son has done his masters in computer science in UF 5 years back. He is also of same opinion. But he is not sure about undergrad programme at FSU. Hence I posted this query in the forum. Thanks once again
FSU’s comp sci program is ABET accredited so that may be something to consider. As far as I know, UF’s isn’t.
@loller : Thank you. Yesterday we received a mail from FSU that my son is awarded 100% out of state tuition fee waiver, which brings out the cost of attendance, by a considerable amount.
@vijayavadrevu What were your son’s stats to qualify for full OOS waiver?
Undergraduate CS programs tend to be similar at most schools. You learn the same data structures, algorithms, language semantics and often use the same textbooks. A few years ago, FSU taught most of the core curriculum with C++, while UF was more Java-oriented (this may have changed). Obviously, you’ll learn both at either school, but to this day I feel more comfortable in C++ than Java.
Also, I believe UF’s CS program is under their engineering school. As a result, the CS curriculum at UF may involve a bit more engineering-oriented courses. Whether this is good is up to you. This may be good for overall rigor but limit your ability to take electives.
FSU’s CS program is under their main College of Arts and Sciences. This seems to give them more flexibility and independence in how they run things since they don’t have to get buy-in from the entire engineering department to make a change. There are still a couple of courses that all FSU CS majors must take that are through the engineering school (Computer Organization 1 and 2).
Despite not being a part of the engineering school, FSU’s CS program is, ironically, the one that is ABET-accredited. I should stress that ABET is not generally regarded as important for CS. Many respectable CS programs are not ABET-accredited, so don’t base your decision on this.
@SweetheartCroc: We have decided on sending my son to FSU considering the factors (1)Now we can afford his undergrad expenses without any pressure (2)My brother stays in Tallahassee, his home is 20 mins drive from the campus
@SAD1010 : My son got 1430 in SAT, 800 out of 800 in SAT Maths, Physics and Chemistry, 4 out of 5 in Math Calculus BC. He is in top 2% throughout his academics… from 8th grade to 12th grade, he has extra curricular activities and technical presentations in his school. May be the SAT, SAT subject scores would have helped him. Iam not sure. How about you (are you a student or a parent? Which college are you going to?)
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Go noles!
Thank you @gingo1234
@vijayavadrevu Thank you for the detailed information! I am a parent. I have a daughter currently at PSU but my D19 will be applying to colleges this summer. She has a 30 ACT and a core 4.0 with honors and AP’s. I have been trying to figure out what the cut off is for the OOS tuition waiver. Congratulations to you and your son!!!
Thank you @SAD1010 . Good luck to your daughter …
UF CS parent here . . . I would say UF is better, but our son is in COE (engineering). UF does have a CLAS CS program too.
With the OOS tuition waiver I’d tip toward FSU, though I’m bummed he didn’t get that from UF. UF CS is doing some interesting things.
No right or wrong answer IMHO.
@sad1010, hi how does one get OOS waiver, does your daughter get that at PSU?
