Jcold9, UF, like many other schools are taking the holistic approach when determining who is admitted. They are looking for people who are well rounded so unlike years ago, great stats won’t guarantee that one gets in. I think its a great way because in all honesty doing well in college has nothing to do with how smart you are but how hard you work. I have classmates that came to UF with me from the same high school, we all scored over 30 on ACT and did well on SAT, yet some of them have flunked out.

Getting a nom for the Lombardi scholarship isn’t necessarily the same as getting it. If you’re the only kid in your school who knew about it, then getting the principal to sign the application would be as easy as pie. So please do not exaggerate your chances. If you are so certain, post your stats and people can come to their own conclusions. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is a foregone acceptance to the University of Florida anymore. Nor is anybody a guaranteed reject. The holistic application approach’s importance to UF cannot be overestimated, especially in the Freshman pool. Yes, transfers are almost purely stats based, but in the freshman admits, everybody’s got a story to tell and a song to sing of their own. So, DKGator, please accept my humblest apologies for coming off as rude (to sanitize your own wording), but without stats, we’re not so convinced you’re such a phenomenal candidate.

DK Gator…my Freshman son lives in Broward this year and absolutely recommends it to everyone as the best social dorm. He doesn’t like the bathroom down the hall deal, but agrees that it was the real reason that he met all the guys on his floor and these days he has 15 or so assorted guys in his room playing XBox every week from his dorm floor. Also, he met lots of girls in Broward. He is moving to an 4BR, 4BA apartment this fall with 3 of the guys that he met in the dorms! They are his best buds! What a great decision it was to go with Broward. This past year, each room was painted, re-tiled, and re-windowed in Broward. It is next to Broward dining and Burger King. It is also the dorm closest to most freshman classes. As far as the football tix, he went to Gatorzone.com and entered the ticket lottery I believe in early summer (June? keep checking). He won the lottery as a freshman and really enjoyed the football season. Good luck to U and all!!

ZapadniyRus, Smile 93, & Jankrav, thanks so much for your input! Broward would be my top choice, probably followed by Jennings. I heard Jennings was recently renovated as well, but I’m glad to hear Broward got refurbished as well! Another choice I had was Rawlings which I haven’t heard much about. & by the way bpsbgs, I’m not here to exaggerate my chances, the point of the post was to ask questions if I was admitted. I won’t argue further than that to waste either of our time.

& thanks for letting me in on the football ticket lottery info. Thats ultra important to me haha

Hey I’m a nominee for Lombardi too (: nice!

and I think Graham Area is the best!

@ DKGator:
My dorm preferences are exactly like yours…
Broward
Jennings
Rawlings
lol

Broward is self-explanatory for social experience
Jennings was really nice when I visited. (Location of mock dorm).
And I imagine Rawlings being just like Broward

@ufucfbound: No way that’s awesome! What’s your major your going in as? I haven’t met any of my competition so it’d be cool to know what i’m up against haha. I’ve never heard of Graham, I’ll get on looking that up. @ wolfootball1 glad to hear someone’s on the same page as me, and as jankrav said, seemed like broward got refurbished so i don’t know how much of a difference in quality there is between broward and jennings. Anyone know about the room spaciousness and which is better in that aspect between broward jennings and rawlings? I know theyre mostly the same dimensions but some of their organization is better than others

The housing website, in my preference, makes the rooms in jennings look better. One of my really good friends insisted I go with Broward however. He told me the exact same stuff that jankrav said.

yeah broward seems to be the best socially. one of my friends at UF is strongly recommending springs, but I think that’s way more expensive. I definitely want to find the housing costs, I’ve been searching google but nothing’s popped up yet

DK Gator: I looked in my paperwork and my S registered for the football lottery on gatorzone.com on April 19, 2010. He heard by email on June 18, 2010 that he won the football lottery for a freshman ticket. He chose Broward for first choice dorms last year(no regrets at all!), Jennings second and Rawlings 3rd. Jennings is a bit further away from your classes (across the street from Broward), but nice—a majority of girls dorm floors with several guys floors on the north side. Jennings has a bit of a moldish smell, but has ice cold A/C and is also pretty social. I don’t know much about Rawlings, other than it’s rooms are similar to Broward, non refurbished as of yet, next door to Broward. Some like Beaty Towers, but many think that the rooms are way too cramped for 4 people, esp. the bedrooms. Also, the suite style living is just not quite as social as the traditional bathroom down the hall. Also, remember that lots of guys pledge a fraternity…and spend alot of the freshman time at the fraternity house. Here’s a link:

Check out YouTube…we found some videos that kids posted of their rooms if we searched the dorm name and UF.

Thank you so much jankrav!!! I’ve also had a lot of friends recommend Springs, do you know anything about that? I know it’s for athletes and it’s newer, and I love the idea of being in a westside dorm (near frats).

I’m going to major in Communications/journalism and take courses aiming towards law as well. (:
I’m not sure I’ll win the Lombardi because my school really doesn’t offer an extensive amount of ECs. But I do have numerous leadership positions in my school, along with a good GPA. uw- 3.8 w-4.5. I am ranked 5/441.
Your stats?

Btw do you know if being nominated for Lombardi increases your chances for admission?

ufucfbound, I don’t mean to jump in this conversation, but I don’t think being a nominee helps you in admissions. Last year, one of my friends from a different school then me was the nominee for their school, and they got rejected. and their stats were just a little lower than mine, so it’s not like it was even a long shot for them to get in.

thank you glasswright and feel free to jump in!! I was just wondering if it was like a “hook” thing!
what were your stats? just like gpa and class rank.

well, my rank was 3rd, although technically I had tied for 2nd by the end of the actual school year. Unweighted GPA was 3.85 or close to that, and I never really figured out my weighted GPA, uf calculates it differently than my High School did. I think Unweighted was between 4.3-4.5. SAT - 2060 ACT - 32 in one sitting, 33 adding up all my highest

we’re very similar except for test scores. I have a 3.8 uw and my UF gpa per an admissions counselor was a 4.4, and I’m ranked 5/441. (:

thanks (:

wow my guidance counselors have been telling me i’m pretty much locked in for admission. But also it depends if the person who was nominated for the lombardi that was rejected notified admissions of the nomination beforehand. And ufucfbound we may have different gpa scales because my school grades on 6.0. I’m ranked 6th/570 with a 3.9 uw and 5.18 w & I have leadership + a variety of extracurriculars. I’m also an AP scholar w/ honors. Are you a national merit/IB/ap award winner of any sort?

DK Gator…I don’t know much about Springs…just that many athletes live there, it is newer, it is suite style living and is more expensive. It is definitely closer to the frats, but when my son rushed, there were a whole bunch of kids on his floor rushing too that week, so he walked over to the houses with them from Broward. He got bids from 3 frats, but in the end, decided that the social commitments were too much for him with a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering double major. Some of the guys who pledged were really put thru the ringer…constantly having to be at the house(schoolwork suffered), man the house phones til 2-3 am even on weeknights, and be a designated driver for upperclassmen to get back from the nightlife in downtown Gainesville. That being said, I think the fraternities are really great, and if your major isn’t too difficult, I think it is a great way to live and socialize.
Here is an interesting link to some of the comments people make about the various UF houses, if you decide to rush in the fall.
