I will hopefully be an incoming freshman this coming fall. I just received my housing applications and have no idea which dorm to request/hope for. UF does not have much information on their dorms, so I was hoping for some input. I really do not have a lot of needs. I am athletic will probably go to the gym every day and will be going to football games etc. But I do not need a ihghly social environment in the dorm, just a nice dorm room. Also does anybody know if communal bathrooms are better than the ones that are shared in between dorm rooms? And does anybody know which dorms have the semi-private bathrooms. Thanks

They're all communal except Hume [honors], Beaty, Keys, Lakeside and Springs. Keys, Lakeside, and Springs are generally upperclassmen and they are apartment style. Beaty is also apartment style and reasonable to get into as a freshman. Hume is, as I said, honors and it is suite style [you share a room with one and a bathroom with three others].

I'm in a communal-style dorm. It's not the best thing ever, but it's livable. Next year, or maybe even at the semester, I'm planning to go to Keys. I personally have not found the dorm to be a fulfilling social experience and found my friends elsewhere, so I don't feel communal-style is more social or what have you. Some dorms by nature may be more social than others. I'm in the Graham Area (Simpson, Trustler, Graham) and our council doesn't seem to do as much as other areas.

The biggest/nicest rec center is Southwest, which is way out by Lakeside. Lakeside is apartment-style and nice, but it's really inconvenient if you don't have a car or bike because it might as well be off-campus as far as distance to classes. If you want convenience to class, go with Broward, Reid, Yulee, Mallory, Murphree, Jennings, etc. I personally feel Simpson, Graham, Trustler, Keys, and Hume are in a good location, but many people find the distance inconvenient. I like to get away from classes and the associations of stress, boredom, whatever I have with them.

The nicest dorms are on east campus near the Murphree/Tolbert area. I loved those compared to the 1.5 years I spent in East. When I first came to East, I was sick every third week for the entire damned year presumably due to the amount of disease that gets disseminated in the bathrooms. I haven't been sick once since that year 3 years ago.

if you're looking for a fun/social freshmen-filled dorm, go with jennings, broward, or rawlings. Weaver (the international dorm) is also a lot of fun/very social. However, i agree with gthopeful that the murphree/tolbert area dorms are the nicest. the courtyard surrounding murphree is very pretty and it's really close to university ave.

I live in Yulee. I picked it at random, pretty much, considering that there is very little information to be found about it, and I love it. The bathrooms were renovated a couple of years ago, so they're much nicer than the average found on campus. Yeah, you share them with quite a few people, but they're cleaned every day and never get too dirty. There are people to be found, but it isn't the most social of halls. I love it, personally, because it seems to be close to everything - my classes are spread out all over campus and the longest it takes me to walk anywhere is ten minutes. It's also steps away from Fresh Foods (one of the dining halls), the Broward pool, and the recreation area (they've got tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, basketball courts, etc.).

Hey everyone! I’ve found the info on this site really helpful! Quick question: How is the Graham area? I know it is mostly freshmen (according to the website) but I don’t know if it’s very far from classes. Is it a nice setup? How are the rooms/bathrooms? Do you find it to be social or more isolated? Thanks!

Quick question reguarding this subject

Is Hume open to all students for the summer term, or still just honors college students?

What about Weaver Hall?

Due to the limited number of Honors students attending over the summer, Hume was open to all students last summer, with Honors students given first preference.

The Graham area is not near classes but for me that was a nice escape from the stress. I lived in Simpson. I was on the ground floor and we had to get a dehumidifier because the rooms were so humid. We had to keep the A/C at like 65* so you were always freezing while your paint was bubbling off the walls.

i’m gonna potentially be a freshman at uf for fall 2010, i’ve been recommended east hall beacause im planning on doing engineering. How is this hall/area?

I was sick every month when I lived in East. Could have just been bad luck, but my body did not like living there.

Edit: lol I wrote the same thing in this same thread over a year and a half ago.

Honors Admission is NOT required during the Summer B term for Hume Hall. Hume Hall is the nicest dorm, in terms of just the room itself.

Are there any single rooms that an incoming freshman can get??

How nice is Hume? I am a National Merit Finalist, and applying to Honors, so from what I’ve heard I have a good chance of getting in. But I’m worried that living with all honors kids might be too much. I am in IB in high school and I want a carefree, social atmosphere, with people who don’t only think of school, school, school, school! What are honors kids like? Is it worth living in Hume to get the nice dorms, and are you forfeiting a fun social scene (like at Broward, Jennings, etc)?

@nurse60 - Yes there are!

Depending on your UF Housing sign up date, there are probably not any traditional single dorms left. However, [Windsor Hall](http://www.trimarkproperties.com/windsor_hall/) and [The Ivy House](Luxury Dorms for UF Students | The Ivy House Luxury Residence Hall) both offer guaranteed placement into a single dorm room, regardless of your sign up date!

Here’s a link with more info on these dorms: [Luxury UF Dorms](http://www.trimarkproperties.com/dorms/)

do you have to pay for luxury dorms out of pocket or is it covered by financial aid?

Yes, you can use financial aid. Unless the financial aid is dorm specific (which very few are – I only know of one), you can pull out the remaining financial aide after paying for tuition and use it to pay for food, housing, books, etc.

typically how much do people get back from financial aid do you know?

That completely depends on the type of financial aid. But it will be the same amount regardless of whether you choose a traditional or a luxury dorm. But don’t let the word “Luxury” throw you off - they’re actually cheaper than the traditional dorms! Here’s a comparison of the prices and features: [Luxury vs Traditional UF Dorms](http://trimarkproperties.com/Dorms/HowItWorks.asp)
