UF dropping National Merit scholarships

My son, a NM freshman at UF told me this was announced in the school paper. He's still covered but it comes as sad news to us.

Wow that's a surprise...

So existing NM's will continue to get theirs for the remainder of their 4 years?

He said they weren't taking new ones but those already with NM contracts will continue to get their scholarship money. I think the other big schools giving NM money were UT at Austin and Kansas. Not sure but my memory is that those were the ones he heard from the most.

UT Austin only gives $4000 first year, $3000 subsequent years - but, ifyou are out of state, they also give a nonresident tuition waiver, if I remember correctly. :) And my understanding of UF was that they were doing away with the full-rides, but were continuing other smaller NMF scholarships. (I could be wrong.)
