<pre><code> I was only 14 when it happened but I already envisioned what was coming next. My father had been involved in a slip and fall accident at work, one of many accidents in his life, which brought his working abilities to a halt, permanently. I knew what was going to be expected of me, months away from my 15 birthday, I would have to obtain a job to support my own expenses such as school supplies, clothing, a future car, and now, college, which was now unthinkable due to our household's income feeding directly to bills. My "meaningful event" had encouraged me to evolve from a mere child relying on his parents funds helping me through car and college fees to a growing man understanding the responsibility that I will soon need while I am away at college. Now, numerous jobs later, I have experienced a phase of adulthood, independence, responsibility, and a bright light at the end of my road (UF). I look at my father's downfall as a rebirth of my own that set me apart from my peers. I have always sought after the AP and honors courses, college courses at night, multiple sports and clubs, and a commitment to two jobs which I can all thank to my life changing event.
I believe this event will affect my college experience dramatically since I will be well prepared for taking responsibility for many things on my own, hundreds of miles away from family. It has encouraged me to make the most of school as I will not know if I'll be in an accident tomorrow. I have come to learn the importance of time management and how to juggle sports, clubs, work, and school. The University of Florida, I believe, is the right school for me because of its culture and students that work just as efficient as I and understand what they are trying to make of themselves. I understand the responsibility ahead of me and the importance of my choice in undergrad schooling, as is why I choose to be a gator at the University of Florida.
