UF Essay Preparation

I'm getting ready to start writing my application essay to the University of Florida. The topic is to describe a meaningful event in your life that has shaped your educational endeavors.

I plan on writing about having a baby when I was 18 years old and how it has motivated me to stay in school and pursue a career not only for myself, but for my child as well. In less than 450 words, I'm going to try and explain how not all young mothers fit the "Teen Mom" stereotype and how I have managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA while attending community college.

Is this a good topic?

Also, there is a section in the application for "Personal and Family Resume Questions," which ask about "family obligations" and such. If I write about my son in that section, do you think it will have become trite if I write my essay about him too?

P.S. I will NOT be making any references to any reality shows in my essay.

My son is applying to UF too.

I would say that yours is a very good essay topic, in that it comes from the heart, and sets you apart from almost all of the other applicants.

But you would have to add some more to the essay than just “I am a single mother, and I want to go to UF not only for my sake, but the sake of my son”

But I am sure you can weave some interesting anecdotes into your essay.
