Going into my senior year in St. Johns County, FL. The #1 public school district in all of Florida. No inflated grades whereas at other FL school districts you can get a 4.0 for just showing up unfortunately.
I’m interested in applying to UF and FSU for the Summer or Fall terms of 2016 (whichever increases my chances). Here are my basic stats:
Intended Major: Accounting/Finance/Business Admin
GPA: 3.8 w, 3.3 uw (slacked freshmen year with some C’s)
SAT: 1980 (not superscored, just one test)
Class Rank: Top 30% (400+ students)
Most Rigorous Schedule* (10+ Honors Classes/6 AP’s)
Business Career Academy Student (Nationally recognized)
Completed AP’s:
Human Geo (5) 9th grade
World History (4) 10th grade
Art History (3) 10th grade
Enviornmental Science (5) 11th grade
Psychology (5) 11th grade
US History (4) 11th grade
I’ve also taken a handful of side classes on FLVS, not electives but legitimate classes so I have quite a few more credits than most students at my school.
Senior Year Schedule:
AP Micro
AP Macro
AP Gov
AP Comp Gov
AP Calc AB
4th Year Academy class (honors)
English 4 Honors
Extracurriculars:
-Member of many clubs and honor societies (Enviornmental Club, HHS, AHS, FBLA, Model UN)
-Nationally ranked 2015 in top 15 for FBLA, competed at the NLC in Chicago this summer. FIRST YEAR IN CLUB TOO* (3rd in state, 2nd in district)
-VP of Robotics Club
-Have a part time job at a restaurant 20+ hours a week
-200+ community service hours
-Internship at a 5-star hotel
-Played JV lacrosse two seasons
So this is just some of the basic information that’ll be on my application, there is much more but I figure you can get a fairly good idea from the info provided. Some of my friends have got into UF/FSU with much lower SAT’s and comparable GPA but with much less AP’s and honors credits. I also believe my EC’s are very very strong when compared to most students.
FSU is a definite yes. I’ve had multiple brothers get in with less/not as good stats. As far as UF, I think it’s a reach. 3.3 UW is going to kill you, especially without a killer SAT/ACT score. And on a side note, coming from a student at a county in the median range for Florida high schools, I have to disagree with the automatic 4.0 comment! Hahaha
Tiger thanks for the reply! I really didn’t try in school freshmen year which really hurts my GPA. Reason being my parents were divorced and thus I was financially unstable as a result of the legal proceedings despite being “upper class”. Not that this is an excuse but as an insecure 14 year old it definitely took a toll on my performance in school.
Totally understand. Sadly, this problem plagues many teens today. I stressed to peers of how important freshman year was to setting the tone for your GPA, but probably 10% listened. It comes back to bite you in the application process, and I truly do feel sorry for all of the people in this scenario. Best of luck to you, and I would advise you to take the ACT. You don’t have to report it, and it doesn’t hurt to try. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and ace it.
Tiger I totally see where you’re coming from! I’m taking the ACT asap. I’m also taking the SAT each time just seeing if I can gain a few points even just to set myself farther above their 75% mark for apps.
Great! If you haven’t already, take every practice exam the ACT offers in preparation (I believe they offer 4 or 5 online). I went from a 30 (practice tests) taking it the first time as a sophomore over Christmas Break to a 33 by the end of Christmas break. I then took the test in February and coincidentally made a 33. They were HUGE helps, as they assist in getting you used to the ACT type questions.
