so would that mean I have 20 or 25 academic courses? BLAH! i've been having dreams I havent been accepted... omg... i only got a 1290 on the SAT... BLAH!!!!

Honors classes are weighted .5 extra point and AP classes are weighted 1 extra pt., i.e. "A" in honors is 4.5, "A" in AP is 5.0. Class rank is very important at UF. Top 5% at public Florida high schools are pretty much guaranteed admission.

they only count honors and AP/IB classes...an A in honors is 4 and a B is 3 etc., and A is AP/IB is 5, a B is 4, C is 3 and so on...regular classes/electives are not included in the GPA calculation

ktwofish has the correct GPA conversion.
A in honors is 4.5, A in regular is 4.0, A in AP/IB is 5.0
B in honors is 3.5, B is reg is 3.0, B in AP/IB is 4.0 etc...

As for when the GPA is calculated...it depends when you apply but for ED and For RD 1, they only use your GPA from the end of your Junior year. They do not ask for nor look at midyear reports unless you are deferred.
Your SAT of 1290 is very acceptable for UF...they are more concerned with your GPA (which looks excellent) and your EC's. Not sure what the bright futures GPA is but it its probably very close to the state U. GPA calculation that we have told you.

what if someone is in top 5% at a Florida school, which is competitive, and has a 4.4 GPA and took 13 AP classes and is a minority, but got a 930 on SAT? I heard they count rank and course rigor and GPA more though. i havent heard of anyone yet who wasnt in top 5% that wasnt admitted so idk

Oboesmrtguy40...Have you taken the ACT? Your GPA is very good and the number of AP classes are wonderful...but the test scores may be below the UF minimum level required. (Each Florida SUS--state university system--school has minimums they require, i.e. 500 in each section). UF considers your strengths (gpa, rigorous schedule, class rank) more than your test score. They may offer you summer admission.

well it wasnt me, it was about one of my best friends. he took the ACT and got an 18. if you dont meet a minimum test requirement, but you did OVERLY good in everything else you are still getting rejected? dont they have a limited number of exceptions they can make? this person also is in band, national honor society and national english honor society and has volunteered and stuff. but i would think the top 5%, the 4.4 GPA, URM status, and being in band would be enough....maybe not. UF isnt taking the January SAT date are they?

I don't know about UF specifically, but FSU requires minimum scores on the SAT before they offer admission (i.e. 500 on each...or 510...I'm not sure exactily because the scores change each year...they get higher)...that is directly from their admissions director. FSU (and USF) has a summer program for students who have potential but may have situations that limit their test scores, etc, (i.e. English is not their first language, first generation to attend college...). Students must attend the summer semester, but then they are able to continue on in the fall...like everyone else.

I would think that UF would have similar requirements and I know they offer students the opportunity to attend in the summer.

Good luck to your friend! He sounds like he will succeed where ever he ends up!

DiGamma23- Yes, at UF, EC's count a lot. If an applicant apply's early and has over a 1350 SAT/4.0 GPA then it may not matter as much, but for RD1 and RD2 they have a huge immensely qualified applicant pool so they have changed the admissions process somewhat in recent years. They review each application both academically (GPA and SAT's) and holistically (EC's, essays). They have been known to reject seemingly perfect candidates. Most of the kids in my area who apply to UF supplement their applications with 5-6 page "resumes" of thier EC's.

you should be fine. as long as you have semi good grades....and extracurriculars. i didn't do so hot on my SAT's but i do have a strong extracurricular and an okay gpa to qualify for UF. i don't think i'm an URM..since i'm asian. some of the ppl who got into UF at my school had barely any and extracurriculars until senior year and no AP's until senior year. but he was scored pretty decent on his SAT's (over 700) and he is a minority. i have not personally met anyone who has been rejected. practically everyone in my school applied was accepted. i know some ppl from other schools who have deferred, which surprised me but i don't know their stats. they could've had a weak essay or bombed junior year. check the stat's profile for UF. good luck. hopefully i'll see you in the fall =)

Admissions Processing.

If they already reviewed my application and thought I would be rejected, they wouldnt have bothered asking me to submit one more document of Florida residency, when I already submitted 2 other documents. So does this mean they feel like I should submit somethign else because they feel I am gonna get in or what? If they already reviewed my application i dont think they would have even asked me to do this. I am a URM, 4.4 GPA, top 5%, 13 AP classes, im in band and play oboe and sax, i have volunteer hours, national honor society, national english honor society, french club, etc. I mean idk.

They don't start reviewing your application until they have all your residency info. completed. but your stats show that you have a good chance.
