University of Florida law graduates are taking the reins at both the state and national bar associations.

UF law alumnus Stephen Zack will be sworn in as the American Bar Association’s president in August. Zack, whose family left Cuba for the U.S. when Fidel Castro rose to power, is the first Hispanic leader of the association.

He’s also a former president of the Florida Bar, a group that will be led by Gators for the next two years. UF law grad Mayanne Downs became president of the Florida Bar in June, and fellow grad Scott Hawkins is president-elect for 2011.
