The University of Florida imposed a hiring freeze that is currently in effect.

UF has implemented a hiring freeze because of a projected deficit of up to $30 million caused by a decline in revenues and rising expenses, WESH 2 News reported.

School President Bernie Machen said the freeze will apply to all faculty and staff at all 35,000 UF units throughout the state.

"We'll start with the budget that the legislature and the governor has given the universities for next year. No tuition increase. No new revenues. So basically our revenues for next year are flat," Machen said.

That means no hiring of any faculty or staff at every UF campus in the state. The only exception are areas funded by federal grants or self-supporting medical clinics or labs.

"If you read the fine print, the governor asked us not to use the tuition increase until 2008. It means no new income for the 2007-2008 year," Machen said.

The university has about 51,000 students and officials said no layoffs are planned.
