Did anyone here participate in it last year? How was your experience?

Has anyone heard whether they've been invited to attend this year yet?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I did that two years ago. It was good, and you definitely get ALOT of benefits. It was funny cause they brought it anyone that was remotely hispanic, i.e 1/16th cuban, lol. That was the first time I had seen UF's campus and I fell in love. The rest is history and here I am a current student :)

i went to the african american one last year and am starting UF in rhe summer. Your counselor will tell you if you are nominated and over the summer before the program UF will send you a letter inviting you (if your invited). you will fall in love with the campus while you are there trust me; its a great experience.

I have only worked them. I divide them into three categories: white/asian, hispanic, and black.

Thank you! My school told me I was nominated, and now I'm just waiting to hear from UF about whether or not I'm invited.

why the segregation?

have you ever heard of URMs? And lets not get started about segregation.

lol....i didn't know they had an asian one. unless the white/asian category....is national merit finalists?

all of the white/asian one is nat'l merit finalist and it occurs during the summer. The blk and hispanic one happens twice a year. The one is feb is from 6-11 grade and the one in summer is 11th grade. Also the blk/his one over summer are usually merit/achievement finalist.

ChamilitaryMayne, I really dont know why its so separate. I guess its to make people feel more comfortable but I am not a big fan of it.

"all of the white/asian one is nat'l merit finalist and it occurs during the summer."

I believe that National Merit Semi-Finalist (which leads to Finalist) is color blind, meaning it's open to to all. But the cut-off PSAT score to achieve this distinction is high. As a result, there are few blacks and hispanics in this group. This is probably what led to the creation of the other two categories, which have substantially lower cut-off scores.

lol....that's established

I got nominated for this too! Whoever else got nominated, be sure to post here when you recieve your invite to give the rest of us an idea of when they are sent out.

Oh, and to the people who are asking why hispanics have their own things, its because white people have like, everything else, and are majorities. We hispanics are minorities/subjugates and need privelages/benefits to make up for it; thats just like, the way it is.

thats just like, the worst explanation i have ever heard in my life...like, what do white people have that hispanics don't? like?

I have to agree with chamilitarymayne. Not the best explanation.

obviously there are reasons for minorities to have some slight advatage and get more attention and given more opportunities. Its not done for the hell of it so lets just leave it at that.

I did get nominated by my counselor and she didn't exactly do a great job explaining what it was. I talked to a girl who went last year and she basically told me they let her apply early decision w/o signing a binding contract. Would be great if anyone else could fill me in...

theres no more early decision...i think if you go it gives you a better chance of getting in

basically you go there and they tell you about UF give you a tour and explain a lot about what they are looking for in an application (you actually have a detailed sit down in groups) and give you examples of good and bad essays (you'd be surprised which are the good and bad ones). A perk is that if you go you don't have to sign the ED contract but since that is no more its just increases your chances of acceptance (especially if the admissions people there remeber your face).

Is the new one deadline being put in already this coming year? I thought they were going to wait a year or two.

nope it's starting this year
