UF Honors College Essay

For the first prompt (Suppose you were told you must take a gap year between high school and college, and you are given a $10,000 budget. What would you do? Make sure your plans fit your budget.) I wrote about how I'd use the money to take a trip to Australia, where most of my family lives. I'm the 57th great grandchild on that side of the family, and all of my late grandmother's siblings are still alive but will probably not be for much longer, so I wrote about how I'd visit all of them and learn about their lives. However, my mother seems to think this isn't a good topic. She'd rather have me write about going somewhere to do community service, or donating the money. I think /so many students/ are going to be writing about going off to some third world country to help out and be the poster children for community service, and while there's nothing wrong with that, I feel like my essay might get lost in a sea of similar ones. Am I wrong? Most applicants aren't going to want to write about how they'd /actually/ spend their $10,000 gap year (traveling/visiting tourist attractions, or just sitting at home and relaxing), so of course the go-to topic would be community service. I'd rather submit something personal about visiting family that I haven't been able to connect with instead of something that I feel a lot of people are going to be writing about.

Opinions?

My son is going through the same thing right now, in fact he just realized it’s due tomorrow. Write what you feel, and comes to mind first. It’s only a few hundred words. He didn’t over think any of his essays and has a lot of offers to consider. I thought they were a little basic but his AP Lit teacher reviewed them and cautioned not to try and be somebody you aren’t. Good Luck!

Yeah my AP Lit teacher looked at mine before my mom even glanced at them and thought they were all good, especially the two I did for the 150 word ones (now the problem is picking between the two of those for one to submit). I just figured what I wrote about for the 300 word one would be more unique than what my mother wanted me to write about. I’m sure I could write a good essay about community service but my point was that’s what I think /everyone else/ will be doing, you know?

Yep, I think it’s tough to be standout on these. I think my son has some unique EC’s and that’s what helped with some acceptances he’s gotten, but it really doesn’t come out in an essay.

Is anyone else getting errors when trying to submit their honors application? it worked fine yesterday but today getting an error.

Oh no that doesn’t sound good, I haven’t submitted yet but I’ll tell you if I have any issues when I’m done editing my essays.

App isn’t working for me either. Does anyone know the petition essay prompt?

I submitted a few minutes ago and everything was fine.
