UF honors decisions?

I didn’t get in and I got a 2120 SAT and 33 ACT. I’m also 2nd in my class.

S did not receive an email response. NMS, but no action on his application. Strange.

curious77 - A second set of emails are supposed to go out on 4/17 for those who applied after 11/1.

Does anyone know if commit rates were taken into consideration? ie: if a large number of people decide to attend other universities will they accept more? or did they factor that into the number who were accepted?

could you have applied even if you didn’t receive the invitation?

Thanks JS62. S applied to UF before 11/1. He is a National Merit Scholar with 1570 SAT and 4.0 unweighted (4.8 weighted) GPA. I do not know what is going on with UF. They have messed up several things with regard to this application process. He received no email at all. Those who say they did not get in, did you receive an email saying that or just no acceptance email?

curious77- This may seem like a silly question, but did your son make sure to check the correct email address? We just assumed that it would be sent to the UF email address, but the honors acceptance was sent to the original email address that my son put on his application.

Have you tried calling the Honors office? I’m sure they’d be happy to just tell you. I called a day before decisions and they told me.

Does anyone know the selectivity rating of the program?

I know that 10 percent of “admitted students” are invited to apply. 10 percent of admitted students with UF’s 40 percent acceptance rate means that only 4 percent of total applicants were invited to apply.

But it seems that even out of the 4 percent of those invited to apply out of all applications, that they rejected many honors applications. Thus I was wondering what percentage they accepted?

If they accepted like half of the students they invited, then it would be about a 2 percent acceptance rate.

Thanks FL and hipster. We checked his regular email address that he had placed on his app. And we will call tomorrow. I did not realize something was amiss until yesterday when I saw this thread. So unfortunately it has been the weekend and a holiday one at that. :)

a bunch of qualified people from my school weren’t accepted, people with better sat scores than me (2100), i dunno what’s up…

last year, wasn’t it a formality?

Perhaps not a valid explanation, but one that seems sort of logical is the fact that many very qualified kids who in past years would attend expensive private schools are choosing to stay in state due to economical reasons, and thus a larger than average pool of kids to choose from.

Oops. We forgot to send the application fee after submitting the online honors app. Oh well… Apparently S received an email awhile back telling him to send it.

lol I got in. honestly though, looking at the program in some detail, it doesnt seem like there is much to it. a few honors courses and honors dorm for two years? and did you look at the numbers for who lives in Hume? I think its either 80 or 90% freshman. that means either a) TONS of sophomores drop out of the program or B) they dont care for living in honors housing very much and its not comparatively amazing.
the honors advising doesnt seem to be something amazing, you can only take 1 honors course first semester (and only 1-2 till jr year), its only 2 year program, and so on… i honestly just think its a label to help attract better students.

Let me introduce you to off-campus housing.

Hello, everyone. I’m a current honors student, an Honors Ambassador, and the 2009-2010 Student Honors Organization treasurer. I’m pretty down with the honors program, so hopefully I can clear some stuff up. :-)

In the past, the application was more of a formality; I’m not sure if they ever had to reject people. This year, there were many more applicants to UF that fit the honors qualifications than in past years. The honors program would still like to be able to offer small class sizes and other benefits that come with limited numbers of students. Thus, not everyone was accepted this year.

Kaitlinc3,

Welcome! My d will be in honors, but she will be living off-campus with a couple of her friends from church (one of them is in honors, too). Does the student honors organization pull in those students off-campus, too? BTW, have you found an honors director yet? I understand you’ve been looking for one. And, any ins and outs of honors, with regards to orientation/scheduling, would be greatly appreciated. :)

zebes

Can you get rescinded from honors?

^ most likely, if you do not maintain a required gpa; i believe they can rescind you.
