UF Housing Payment

I'm kinda confused here. It general, how much money is owned over the entire year? I got a e-mail saying I have to pay around 2000 per term, how much does that come out to be in the first year of undergrad?

You will pay that twice, Fall semester (now) and again for the Spring semester. So, around $4,000 for your first year.

How does payment work if you have a financial aid deferment? Do they just deduct it from your refund, like with tuition, or do they give you your full refund and then expect you to turn around and write them a check?

You request a housing deferment on the housing site. If you have at least (I think) $4500 in financial aid - you will qualify. Then once your financial aid is dispersed, they pay your housing and tuition and anything else you deferred (meal plan, books) and return anything left over to you in the form of a refund.

Okay, thanks. I’ve already requested (and gotten) a deferment, but I wasn’t sure exactly how the process worked.

Can someone explain how it turns out to be around 20,000 per year? If Tuition is around 5k and housing is around 4k, where else is most of the money?

They add a lot of expenses on there that may not pertain to you…here’s the link to the chart.

[Cost of Attendance : UF | Office for Student Financial Affairs](Cost of Attendance | UF Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships)

Food, transportation, books, miscellaneous living expenses… That $20,000 is what UF estimates you will need to survive for the school year, not just what you have to pay the university.

@propwash: Would you say that the $20,000 estimate is accurate or does a student generally spend more or less (after tuition and housing are deducted)?

I have no clue, I’m transferring to UF this year. I’d like to know too!

I am about to enter my senior year at UF. Living off campus in a relatively expensive (around $575 per month) apartment, I would say I spend about $6000 per semester on rent and food and other miscellaneous expenses. I think that may be on the higher end of the spectrum, also. I’d say with tuition included, you really only spend around $18,000 a year.
