The University of Florida is moving forward with its plans to build the $62 million Lake Nona Research & Academic Center adjacent the Burnham Institute for Medical Research.

Twenty Florida companies, including 11 local firms, wanting to be hired as construction manager submitted bids by the March 10 deadline. UF’s selection committee will develop a short list of the top candidates for interviews during the next three to four weeks.

Local firms submitting proposals were: Balfour Beatty Construction LLC, Barton Malow Co., Clancy & Theys Construction Co., James A. Cummings Inc., Hardin Construction Co. LLC, Hunt Construction Group Inc., PPI Construction Management and WG Mills Inc./Austin Commercial LP, all of Orlando, as well as BE&K Building Group LLC of Maitland, Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Lake Mary and Ajax Building Corp. of Clermont.

Funding and a timeline for construction of the 100,000-square-foot, four-story building — which would include research labs and academic, office, conference and support space — remain uncertain.
