Hello everyone! I recently found out I was accepted to UF and I am so happy! I didn’t think I would get in, but I applied anyways, just in case and it paid off! Anyways, thinking I wasn’t going to get in, I didn’t apply to housing and now I’m in a predicament. I want to apply to live on-campus as soon as possible, but I’m not sure if they give out housing fee waivers? I wouldn’t mind paying the fee, but since its non-refundable and there’s a possibility it can get waived… I don’t know what to do at this point. I emailed UF housing, but it’s the weekend and I’m stressing lol. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what dorms are good and what dorms are not? All input is appreciated!
In regards to what dorm is the best, in my (biased) opinion I’d suggest any of the dorms in the Tolbert area. When I lived there my first Summer B and fall semesters I was in walking distance from the Reitz and where most of my classes were. Also, if you have a dining plan Gator dining is right there! Tolbert area is a decent dorm to live in, I lived in a double room with just my sister and I.
@allthingsamanda Thanks for your help! For the dorms, do you know any towers/halls that would offer my own bedroom, but be roomed with 2 or 3 people in the dorm (if that makes sense)? I’ve shared a room all my life with my brother and I don’t want to share anymore lol.
My son likes Tolbert area too. He put in his housing deposit after he was accepted, like you, and got lucky that his roommate pulled him in.
I’m not sure how likely it is for you to get a single in a suite style room unless you find someone to pull you in during roommate matching season. UF dorms don’t have as much of that option. It does exist but upper class students seem to have an advantage on those rooms.
Having a roommate is a great way to meet people. We did not think our son would like it - at all - and it has worked out fine.
@SouthFloridaMom9 I’m glad it all worked out for him; I hope I have his luck this upcoming Fall, I think I’m gonna need it! I decided not long ago that having a roomate would be a good thing while in college, I would just like my own private bedroom and/or bathroom but thanks for your help as well!
@MMXVII I believe Cypress Hall allows you to have your own bedroom and bathroom but live on a floor with others. Since it’s one of the newer halls and it’s a single room it may be a bit expensive though. Link: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/blog/hall/cypress-hall/
Lakeside is apartment styled so you’d have your own room but share a kitchen, living area, and 2 bathrooms amongst 3 other students. Link: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/blog/hall/lakeside/
Beaty Towers is also apartment styled so you’d have your own room but share a bathroom and kitchenette with 1 other student. Link: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/blog/hall/beaty/
@allthingsamanda This is just what I was looking for, so thank you!!! My ideal would be my own bedroom and/or bathroom, but have roomates also in the dorm so it’s easier to make friends and all that good stuff. I’m definitely gonna look in at the links you gave me.
Update: UF housing emailed me back and there are no fee waivers for the housing application, just for a future reference! Anyone else have any tips or information about UF housing for me?
I am starting Summer B, but I received an e-mail that indicated that I could only choose from the following dorms:
Buckman Hall
Cypress Hall
Graham Hall (AIM ONLY)
Infinity Hall
Lakeside Complex
Mallory Hall
Reid Hall
Springs Complex
Thomas Hall
Trusler Hall (AIM ONLY)
Yulee Hall
Did anyone else receive this?
On the housing website those are the dorms listed for those wanting housing for summer b/fall/spring. Last year Jennings was on the list too but they seem to have removed it. When my son started we had to do two separate contracts. One for summer b and then another for fall/spring and he had to move dorms after Summer B. Now it seems they have it set up so you stay in the same room for the year but dorm selection is limited.
^That’s interesting, Broward and Jennings are not on the Summer B/Fall/Spring list. However, some nice choices are available, including Infinity and Cypress Hall.
Anyone have any opinions on Lakeside Complex? That’s the dorm I feel more comfortable with, well reading about.
From what I’ve read, Lakeside is super far from campus.
And Springs Complex seems nice, but it also seems kind of far and I’ve read it is very athlete-heavy. If that is your thing, that is fine, I guess. Also, many of these “nicer” dorms will also be more expensive. Most of these dorms are not traditional freshman dorms, which is disappointing. The two that I think would be best contenders are for AIM only.
@juliasd Oh yikes! never mind LMAO. What other dorms are you thinking about? I would ideally like a traditional freshmen dorm with roommates, but our own separate bedrooms/bathrooms. I’m honestly stuck now.
I think a lot of freshman are going to end up with community style dorms.
@Trisherella Guess I can’t complain then. What dorm styles is your son thinking about for UF, UCF, and FSU?
Can I ask about your profile since you got accepted and didn’t think you would? GPA? SAT? EC? Community Service? Thanks.
