Hi.
I live in Florida and am a senior this year. So I will be applying to colleges very soon. My two top choices are FSU and UF. And I know that UF has better stats and so on. But, I’m visiting FSU right now and have absolutely fallen in love with the campus, the town, and all the things there are to do around here. I haven’t visited Gainesville yet, but I’ve heard there’s not much to do.
Yes, obviously I know that UF is “better” statistically, but what do you recommend based off of any experience that you may have?
If it helps, I want to major in either psychology, criminology, or possibly pre-med.
I don’t want to pick a college soely based off of numbers and not enjoy myself.
Thanks!
I’m stuck with the same decision man. I personally like UF’s large campus over FSU’s. It’s got a really traditional college feel to it and I like how there’s tons of stuff on campus. However the student body at FSU is wayyy better. More hot girls and more “white guys” I suppose. Not sounding racist. At UF everybody seemed foreign like Asian or Indian. I know that sounds weird and I bet there are lots of white people who attend but I just felt weird being a white male at UF while immersed in the general population there.
Er…ok…where to start…
It’s perfectly fine to select FSU over UF, if you prefer that school and your major is fairly strong at FSU. For example, if your major was engineering, you clearly would need to choose UF (if accepted). However, FSU is very strong in criminology and strong in psychology. I don’t think pre-med matters when picking between the two schools.
UF is one of the nations/worlds largest research universities, it has close to 17,000 grad students (FSU has close to 8,000), many of which are international.
However, the undergraduate population is very different, with 88% (89%) being from in-state.
Race:UF/FSU
White: 58%/66%
Hispanic: 19%/17%
Black/AA: 7%/9%
Asian: 7%/3%
As you can see, the two schools are similar, with UF having slightly more Hispanics/Latinos and Asians, while FSU has slightly more Black/African Americans. At either school, you’ll fine plenty of white males, but you’ll also fine a lot of diversity. UF and FSU are more like the "real world’ when it comes to racial breakdowns; now’s the time for you to accept it and make it work for you.
Good Luck!
What a strange post. Please don’t pick FSU over UF because you think FSU has more “white guys.” You will probably be an embarrassment.
From what I understand, acceptance into medical schools is largely a function of your GPA and your test scores. UF’s slight edge in rankings isn’t really going to be a factor.
As Gator88NE mentions, UF has a stronger Engineering program. Aside from that, it really depends on the major. FSU is generally strong in the “liberal arts and sciences,” while UF tends to be stronger in pre-professional programs, except for Law, where the schools are about even.
