UF or FSU?

Hi

I am new to this web site and recently was accepted to UF for the summer B term. Previously, I got accepted to FSU in November. I am from oos and I don't feel any strong allegiance to being a Nole or a Gator. I love sports and bith schools seem to have tremendous school spirit.

I visited both campuses and really liked them a lot. I am not sure yet what I plan to study yet .

For those who go to UF and maybe have friends at FSU, can you please give me your honest opinion on what makes UF or FSU better. The campuses both seemed to be nice, but FSU appeared to have many more new and renovated buildings. For example they have two new dorms and a bunch of new academic buildings.
Being out of state, the students I met at both schools seemed really nice. Is there a big difference between the student bodies at each?

Thanks for any info you can give me. I feel so lucky to have gotten into UF and FSU. My SAT’s were only 1270 and with all that’s going on, I feel like I am lucky to have gotten in.

Thanks

Both are great Universities. You can't go wrong either way.

what are you studying?

why didnt you also post your question on the FSU site?if you want both POV you probably should ,

I have friends now attending both colleges and the FSU friends LOVE FSU and the UF friends LOVE UF. Since you've visited both campuses you know that FSU's campus is more compact and walker friendly. Football and basketball are better at UF. Baseball is better at FSU. UF has good Engineering and Business...FSU is more liberal arts. It really does make a difference in what you're studying. What state are you from? It gets a little colder in Tallahassee than in Gainesville.

^Ha. FSU football is coming back. ;)

FSU also has good business majors. See: FSU Highlights

It all comes down to personal preference. Which school feels like a better fit?

Also, remember that dominance in sports is cyclical. For many years, the FSU football and basketball teams were better than UF's. Regardless, UF currently holds bragging rights in both sports.

When I compare the people I know at UF to those I know at FSU, the ones at UF are higher caliber students. My friend at FSU who was a little above average in my AP/IB classes says he is often times one of the smartest students in the class.

I was impressed with both schools overall, academics, facilities, friendliness of students. Of course each had some elements that set them apart. I personally liked the fact that UF had two gyms and an outdoor pool. They also have an excellent wellness/health system where each student was assigned to their own doctor.
FSU's new and renovated dorms were by far the nicest of all schools we visited. The campus and nearby streets with sororiety houses dripped with southern charm.

Apparently the last two Rhodes Scholars from Florida (both FSU students) did not get the email they are supposed to be dumber than their counterparts at UF. Sheesh.

Thanks for all the great information. As I am not sure what I want to study yet, it seems like FSU may be a better fit because it seems to be more of a liberal arts school.

I also am not concerned with being around the smartest students. I am sure that the students at FSU are plenty smart. It is harder to get into UF, and I am sure they have many high achieving students, but for me, I think I want more of a balnce.

As an out of state student (Rhodel Island) its interesting to me that so many in state students think UF is so much better than FSU. Many people outside of Florida don't really see a big academic or ranking difference between the two. I know UF is ranked higher, but this is not a crucial variable.

Its a tough decision, but I think I am leaning toward FSU.

Wow, I can't believe I registered simply to assist you in making this decision. To me, it is an absolute no brainer. I can't figure out how someone who got into UF could even consider FSU, let alone be "leaning that way."

Let me tell you this, people in Florida feel a certain way for a reason. We know our schools. I couldn't tell you **** about URI, except that they're the Rams and Lamar Odom went there (I'm a sports fan if you can't tell). If someone asked me about URI and you about URI, you could tell them way more. I'm sure you know your **** about RI schools. Well the people in Florida know theirs too, and everyone and their mother knows UF is a far better school. I am currently a Gator, but please do not allow yourself to think that I am biased when I give you this advice.

UF outclasses FSU when it comes to the most important thing: academics. When you graduate from college, there is nothing on your diploma that says "football quality: A" (UF), "girls: A" (FSU), "STD ratio: 2 to 1" (FSU), "nice dorms" (FSU). But there is something that says UF or FSU on it, and if you have any pride in yourself and your schoolwork, how FSU could even be an option is somewhat amusing. Everyone in FL knows UF is far better. I cannot think of a single person who chose FSU over UF. I am unaware of what school(s) almost everyone and their mother applies to in RI (URI and Prov. would be my guess), but virtually anyone in the top half of their class applies to both here. Everyone who gets into UF (which is obviously the most selective) goes here, and everyone who got very disappointed in being denied goes to FSU. As stated, I don't know anyone who got into both that would go to FSU. You heard me right, everyone I know who goes to FSU (and I'm from FL so that's a lot of people) either got denied from UF which was their first choice, or didn't even apply to UF since they knew that they wouldn't get in.

For someone coming from out of state, money is going to be similar and it may seem that one or the other isn't that big of a deal. But the resounding truth is that UF is so far out of FSU's league, that I couldn't simply watch you choose FSU without conveying this to you. FSU is ranked #119 for a reason, and UF is in the top 50 not simply by being a tad better. The difference is vast, and if you got in here, you owe it to yourself to go here. After all, if you turn down UF for FSU, you're going to be around an entire campus (FSU) full of people who would have given virtually anything to have taken your spot at UF. All of those extra miles you traveled in high school, running for that office in clubs, getting into the NHS, going balls out test after test to get good grades--kid, whether you know it or not, that was you going the extra mile so that you didn't have to settle for FSU, you were earning that trip to UF. And you got it. I could go into great detail on any aspect of UF life, but that wasn't really the purpose of this post. Going to FSU might seem to be a good fit now, but you could honestly fit in anywhere. ****, the first time I even saw UF was when I moved in. I didn't visit anywhere.

In closing, how anyone could take FSU over UF is beyond me, and truthfully beyond most anyone who is very knowledgeable about the differences between the two, even FSU students (although they may disagree out of school pride and self pity). I'm sure I'll draw some negative reactions from some FSU people on here, but they should seriously ask themselves if that is simply due to the fact that they (or their kids) were unable to get in here. Remember there are pro's and con's to everything. If you have student body questions as well, I can help you with that.

"IT'S GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR!"

the guy who posted on top of me is displaying the typical arrogance that many UF students have. im a freshman at FSU, and chose it over UF. It's insane to think that either university is hands down better than the other. UF and FSU are both big state schools with a decent party scene, neither one is Harvard. I chose FSU because it felt much more personal and I was turned off by the overwhelming feeling that "It is an honor to be accepted at UF," not to mention the rediculous class sizes. It really comes down to personal preference, both schools are great and essentially equal. (but the parties are better at FSU)

^ Both have trouble with class sizes. UF = 50k students, FSU = 41k students

What Gator2011 said is the truth, but I wouldn't have said it so...erm...bluntly. The vast majority of students who get accepted to both schools choose UF because it simply is a better school, unless you want to study art, music, or meteorology, or a couple other very specific disciplines. Don't listen to the parents on here who are trying to play nice or trying to talk their kids' school up because they're insecure about the choice. UF is a far better and MUCH more prestigious academic institution. FSU is the place where the UF rejects go (yeah, there are some exceptions, we don't need to hear about your lovely daughters).

in before parent2noles

Unless those parents also happen to be graduates of said university, then they might just have a clue as to what is fancruft posturing and what is not.

The bottom line is that both schools are decent public universities and right now UF has higher ratings in some areas. Such things are transient. Do such things matter? Maybe - go to UF for engineering, FSU for political science and the like.

The notion of university "prestige" is overrated in general society unless you graduated from one of the top 20 schools in the US, like Harvard. I guarantee that a university graduate these days will be evenly treated even if you graduated from St. Leo University, as long as you perform in the workplace.

Lots of luck in your selection.

must be somethin in the koolaid over in hogtown, 95% of people have no idea which school is which, theyre both just big football dominated party schools. if you seriously think your going to get a job over me just because your degree says uf and mine says fsu, your out of your mind.

I still firmly believe: FSU > UCF

That it's even a discussion is quite telling.
