UF or UCF honors??

I recently was accepted into UF and was ecstatic. But now I face a tough decision. Earlier I was accepted into UCF Burnett Honors College, with the EXCEL Program, and one of their Pegasus Scholarships. I don't know if UF will be offering me a scholarship, but money is not my main issue in choosing, though I certainly do not count it out. I would like some helpful advice as to where I should go and why. I will be majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
I also have Florida Bright Futures and Florida Prepaid money. So I will be helped financially at either university.

Also...how do I request a term change for UF? I have Summer B now and would like Fall.

To start off I am a freshman at UF. Thus far I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The teachers are all very prestigious researchers who know what they are talking about. My chem 2 professor as an example, Dr. Martin, is ranked 92nd top chemist of the 21st century. He teaches well and always adds in bits and pieces about what he’s researching. It’s also great if you want a researching position. The engineering program here is one of the top ranked in the country and our engineering buildings are either new or in the process of being renovated. The student life is great and it feels good having pride in your school. I don’t know much about UCF honors but I got into UCF as well last year and I chose UF. Probably the best decision I have ever made. Another thing, all the dorms are getting new furniture. Anddd besides that I dont know what else you want to know. If you have anymore questions let me know. :)

thank you for your input!
As a freshman, what dorm would be most beneficial to me? and which dorms are nicer in general?

Well I currently live in North Hall which is a great location. It’s not rowdy and there are a lot of places near it that are great for studying. Im going to be in Tolbert Hall single room next year which is basically connected to North Hall. The location is great. It’s close to the Reitz Union food court and gator dining center. I can see the Football stadium out my window but I never hear any noise. Most freshman typically pick Broward Hall but the Tolbert Area halls are nicer in my opinion. Also the bathrooms are always very clean and from experience whenever I take a shower all the other stalls are empty so it’s not overcrowded or anything.

I do know that UCF has an excellent aerospace engineering program, though I am not sure about UF. If the most prominent factor is your decision making is soley major related, I think you are in good hands with UCF (also considering you got into their honors program), but it all depends on what other factors you are putting into consideration.

I believe UF has a much higher ranking in aerospace engineering than UCF but I’m having a hard time finding the rankings I saw yesterday. My main problem is trying to balance UF’s prestige with UCF’s modern and urban appeal…and free money lol

That and I’m worried that the attention I will be afforded by UCF’s EXCEL and honors program won’t be offered to me at UF. So if I need help it will be much harder to be recognized at UF as more than a number and have the ability to be helped personally…am I on target with UF or should I not be worried about that?

UCF is the better choice for you IMO. I have a friend that also wants to major in aerospace engineering. The prestige of UF won’t help you nearly as much as all of the resources that UCF offers. Internships, top notch engineering program, honors college, and the scholarship all add up to make it a better package.

You can be at the best school in the nation for your particular major, but if you don’t take advantage of the opportunity, it is of no difference. Pick the school where you will be happiest and able to learn the most.

You’re right, UF has neither of those.

Resources > Prestige. Just sayin’…

Though resources might be more beneficial in the short term than prestige, over time the alumni network at UF would be infinitely more valuable than that at UCF. UF has people all over the country, in virtually every sector; UCF can’t claim the same.

Also, UF may not necessarily give you the “royal” treatment, like UCF has already endowed upon you, but I think that even going with the average utilization of resource at UF would be worlds better than UCF could give you, if for no other reason than that you’ll be taught by some of the greatest minds in the world, even if you’re not in honors.

Realistically, Honors, at least at UF or FSU, but I don’t know about UCF, doesn’t make a huge difference, so I would choose UF regular over UCF honors, easily. However, you should visit both of the schools and get a feeling for their respective atmospheres really to decide; I know that my visiting FSU and UF totally changed my perspective on the schools, because marketing materials will obviously gloss over the problems in each school’s atmosphere. It has to click with you beyond all else.

Edit: Also, if you want to change term, you need to call them, but it is very, very difficult to change from Summer B to Fall, unless you have a really good reason for doing so. Besides, from my friends who went to UF last year, Summer B’s a better time to start than Fall because it is much less overwhelming.

GThopeful was (obviously) being immensely sarcastic. UCF has a pretty decent aero program, but no way is the program on the same level as UF.

To exemplify this, the difference in reach between a UF degree and a UCF one is evident even as close as Atlanta. My apartment complex (good part of town) has alums from many different colleges, according to their car stickers. I counted at least 5 UF graduates among many other universities that come to mind such as UVa and Wake Forest. I haven’t seen a UCF sticker yet – anywhere, including while out driving. I did actually see a USF one a few months ago though, and I’ve seen a smattering of FSU ones as well around town.

UCF proponents like to bring the honors college into the argument, but just remember that it won’t say “UCF honors college” on your diploma, it will say “UCF”.

From what I’ve seen, UF is nationally recognized as a top tier engineering school while UCF is not, so regarding resources and opportunity does UCF even compare?
I want my hard work in college to be worth it in the long run in terms of job opportunities with such names as Boeing or Lockheed Marting, so negating every other factor than that…would UF or UCF honors be more beneficial?

Go to wherever you like more. However, based purely on prestige, go for UF.

Go to UF because the student-faculty ratio is substantially better than that at UCF.

What is the point of going to a university (remember YOU pay to attend, even if you get a scholarship) where the numbers are against you in working with faculty?
