Hey everyone, I'm a longtime reader but this will be my first post. I need some advice and input from people who really know UF. I am from New Jersey, and am choosing between Florida and Maryland. I am planning to major in Mechanical Engineering.

Florida offered me an $8,000/year Office of Admissions Alumni scholarship, while Maryland offered a $12,000/year Presidential. Other than that the financial aid packages from both schools are about the same. Florida would be slightly more expensive because I would have to fly home.

I like Maryland because it's engineering school is really highly regarded, along with it's proximity to home and internship opportunities in DC. I like Florida because of the awesome campus, amazing school spirit and Florida weather.

What sets Florida apart or justifies the extra cost and distance? Any insight/advice is much appreciated.

“I like Maryland because it’s engineering school is really highly regarded, along with it’s proximity to home and internship opportunities in DC”

Well it seems you understand the academic edge the Maryland program might have over the Florida program. Also, if visiting your family frequently is a big plus then Maryland would be the more obvious choice.

“I like Florida because of the awesome campus, amazing school spirit and Florida weather.”
Is the climate a big factor for you? Is it worth spending a few extra G’s?

It all depends on your personal priorities. Where do you feel more comfortable? If you put academics on a scale versus ambiance, who wins?

It all comes down to what you want out of your college experience. I don’t know what you deem more important but you should pick a place that will meet your goals, whether your goal is being in a place where you feel has great spirit, or being in a place who’s degree/location might give you an advantage when finding a job.

I don’t think anyone can direct you to a “pick this place over this one” solution, that’s something you must evaluate according to your personal priorities and goals. Whatever you end up picking, you should rest assure that you’re getting great education. Congrats on the scholarships and good luck :)
