I applied to UF and USF as transfer around December 2011. USF accepted me longg ago with nice scholarship (which is important to me because im out of state, and out of state tuition is astronomical), but UF still hasnt made decision. I wanted to go to UF because I heard it is better school, but I heard they dont give scholarships, while their out of state tuition is twice of USF. I am moving to Florida in like a week, so I will finally be able to attend USF orientation and register for classes, which I am scared are going to be full soon, but should I wait for UF decision before deciding definitely on USF? I mean, what are the chances I will get into UF AND get nice scholarship (covering significant amount of the $30,000 out of state tuition)? My college and HS gpa is 4.0, I have IB diploma (idk if that counts for scholarships here), am involved in bunch of clubs and whatnot, my major is physics.

I mean if I dont hear back from UF by like end of May im definitely just going to go to USF, but idk if I should even wait that long...i mean geez half a year to make a decision?! is anyone working in that admission office or just sleeping or something?!

My friend is a valedictorian with a 5.44 GPA and quite a lot of other merits and his scholarship package had quite a few zero’s. As in “$0.00”. Chances? Not high. In fact, I don’t see any out-of-state tuition scholarships for anyone but freshmen on the UF website. Besides, the nickname for the UF financial aid department is “The Damn Scrooges” because they are very very stingy. The cost of attendance of UF is not worth it, in my opinion. Besides, USF is a highly rated school for research, which is perfect for a physics major. Not to mention I hear there’s scholarships for research too

however i forgot to mention that while im great at science/math, i am horrible at writing, so my essay portion of the application was probably bad…the only reason i get A’s in stuff like english/history and so am able to maintain 4.0 gpa is probably cus professors see i try rly hard…so how big of a factor is the short essay portion of the application in decision/scholarships?

wait how can you have 5.44?? in my college and HS highest is 4.0? so even if you get extra credit, it’s still 4.0?? will a college consider a 5.44 higher than 4.0 even though 4.0 was highest possible i could get??

either way, thank you…since your friend’s experience supports what i have heard about uf financial aid, i think i will just call UF tomo and tell them to cancel my application, i hate continuing to wait, i want to finally solidify my plans

All universities take into account the GPA scale at your school and then adjust it according to their own scale.

When someone says they have a 5.44 GPA out of a 4.0 scale they are generally talking about their weighted GPA.

The 5.44 was indeed weighted, and let me say that my year, the graduating class was highly competitive, the entire top ten seemed to be 5.4+ weighted

UF is a great school… if you are paying in-state tuition, or you’re getting a scholarship. $30k a year for UF doesnt seem worth it. Even a great public school struggles in comparison to a good private, when the costs are even.

Both are better than FSU… ;D

Uh, sure… Just ask USF students.
