hey guys, just want your opinion on this. I've got a scholarship of about 40% of my fees from USF and admission into the Honors college at USF. Now I have got admission from UF (not honors) and no idea if they are offering any scholarship for international undergrad students. I'm in a fix, which one is better in terms of academics, housing and career prospects?

I am personally biased to like UF more, but it depends a lot in your situation.
For example, what are you planning to major in? Or, perhaps, what future plans do you have?

Getting into honors is definitely worth considering, and the scholarship is very appealing too. You’ll have to decide what fits more to your future purposes.

In terms of academics, UF is well regarded among public universities. Housing is subjective. Career prospects depend on your own prospects.

From what I’ve read, UF is more highly regarded.

But you have to do a whole cost vs. benefits analysis.

Can your parents afford everything? How much do you stand to save if you go to USF? Is USF for you (I think I read that its a commuter school)? What’s your major? Are you going to go to grad school?

hi, thanks for your comments. I want to major in economics and political science. The scholorship is really very appealing but i want a good academic univ. I’m currently going into undergrad and will also go to grad school. I also read that USF was a commuter school and now they have made it compulsory for all freshman to stay at the campus. UF is not offering any finanacial aid. Also, is honors college better that the regular stream?

If you’re planning on going to grad school, then you should definitely choose USF. The money saved and the honors chances are too good. Nobody will really care about your undergrad after grad school so it’s all well.

Honors college is indeed better than regular classes and, most importantly, it will let you graduate with ‘Honor’ distinction in your school documents.

I suggest you take advantage of the opportunities offered by USF and do your best to make your stay at the university enjoyable and productive. If you graduate with a high GPA, with Honors, and participate in interesting university activities (or internships), you’ll greatly boost your chances on landing for a great graduate school.

That’s my 2 cents on it. My best wishes.

Hi Andrewheat, thanks a tonne for your time. Yeah, i was also thinking on the same lines. btw, are you an undergrad, if so from which univ? I read somewhere that the credits from USF cannot be transferred to other unergrad uni’s. say UF. is that true? I’m just keeping my options open, in case after 2 years I think of changing. where can i get this info from. any info on this please…

I’m not an undergrad yet but I’m ready to join this year, I’m just still waiting for some universities’ decisions until I choose where to go. I have read many threads around CC and also applied for UF so I have quite some information.

Regarding transfers, here’s the info website for UF:
[University of Florida - Admissions](Transfer - How to Apply - University of Florida)

I’m not very informed about transfers but I am almost certain that consideration of credits depends on the university you’ll transfer to. That means that if you transfer to UF, you’ll have to ask UF if they will grant you the credits you obtained back at USF.

Thanks Andrewheat… just got accepted into PURDUE… not heard of any fin.aid yet… seems they dont have any for intl undergrad. STUCK 'tween usf’s scholarship and purdue’s reputationnn.

Take the money and don’t look back.

The honors program at USF offers a very special “small college” environment inside the larger university. From their website:

Benefits of participating in the Honors College include:

* Small classes that encourage interaction among students and USF’s top faculty
- Personal advising by faculty and staff who are committed to your success
- Priority registration to guarantee class availability
- On-campus opportunities to work with faculty who are doing cutting-edge research
- The chance to broaden your horizons through international study or participating in honors conferences across the country.

These advantages are really hard to beat. Purdue may have a more recognizable “name”, but it looks to me like there are serious advantages for you at USF honors.

Purdue is definitely a strong name and it would be worth considering in many cases, but the fact is that for your career plans USF Honors is still better.

Purdue is better known for their engineering program and business to a certain degree.
Since you plan on studying humanities courses the brand name means very little.

guys…your comments are helpful… the allure of the scholarship is definelty greater than the brand name…but wondering if purdue will take me after i finish my undergrad from USF… heard USF is not known outside florida… is that true…

happymomof1 - my mom thinks the same too…:-)) atleast it will take off some of the financial burden… the scholarship is between 30-35%, understand this is good for an international student… another reason my mom feels… is that to keep the scholarship going I need to maintain a certain GPA and having academic targets will keep me focused on studies and not other things…ur take on this please

Most public universities (few exceptions) are not well known outside their region because USA is a very big country and all regions have their respective famous universities. Purdue is not known outside it’s region either.

It is true that you need to maintain a certain GPA to keep your scholarship but I am certain that you will have enough time to socialize and doing other things besides studying. You are a very capable student since you were admitted to Florida, Purdue, and USF Honors so you will undoubtedly be able to manage college. Remember that socializing and extracurricular are an important part of college life too.

hey just asking what was your gpa and sats

mine?
GPA : 3.8 (or slightly more)
Sat 1 : 2000

have you applied for USF/UF, jellyjam?

“wondering if purdue will take me after i finish my undergrad from USF”

Graduate school admission is based on undergraduate GPA, GPA in courses related to the graduate field of study, GRE scores, your statement of purpose, and your letters of recommendation. Students from colleges and universities that you and I have never heard of get into great graduate programs every single year. Don’t be concerned about the “name recognition” of the USF honors program. Chances are that the graduate admissions committee will be well aware of it.

Hey, you know I’m going to say this, but here goes: Listen to your mom! She’s known you since before you were born, and probably has a pretty good sense of what will help you do well in college.

Wishing you all the best!
