Was in unwise to choose UF over UM as a pre-med student, considering that price was not a factor (they cost about the same for me)? I chose UF because I liked the traditional college atmosphere, and felt that their pre-med program was about equal to UM.. Many people are telling me that UM was the better choice because of their overall ranking and pre-med focus... I am majoring in Biochemistry if that means anything..

I guess I'm just looking for some more opinions. I know this may be biased, so I am posting the same thing in a general college discussion thread and the UM page

I think it matters more if your goal is UM med school.
The majority of their Med class is made up of UM applicants. I know some Grad/Med schools give preference to applicants from their own school, if that’s the case I would have def gone for UM.
Either way all is not lost if UM med school is your goal. Even though the majority of the Med class comes from UM, the percentage made up of UF applicants is a close 2nd.

If you’re just applying to other random med schools, I don’t think a degree from UF or a degree from UM is THAT big of a difference to the admissions committee.

Well, my goal is definitely not UM med school. I’m looking to go out of state to Med School, preferably to a top ten medical school. I’m also looking to do a lot of research in my undergraduate career… do you think my choice was a good one?

It honestly doesn’t matter if you’re looking to go out of state for med school because both UF and UM are well known and respected schools and no one has a preference for one over the other when you’re looking out of state. Med school is all about a high GPA, MCAT score, letters of rec and proving you’re commited to becoming a doctor through shadowing and a generally good person by volunteering. A medical school is not going to deny you based on a schools ranking or name.

Just make straight AAAs and everything will be just fine.
