Hi, I'm currently debating between UF and UCF, and I'm having difficulty receiving an unbiased opinion. I'm also considering UM, but it's 20,000 more than the other two, so I'd need absolute confirmation that it's worth going to before going. Could any of you tell me precisely why you chose UF over others, disregarding any bias you might have attained over your enrollment?

Well, I am going to take a pre-med major, I want a strong program like UF, and basically at a university that would have -obviously- prestige and experience. Not like FIU, which just began with their College of Medicine. UM is really good with their Miller School of Medicine but their problem is money even though MD career is expensive. I don’t even look at UCF because I feel it’s -in some way- immature in terms of pre-med. I am not biased, I just use my common sense.

If money is the problem I’d go to UF, if not, I’d go to UM.

I found this article a while back about UCF’s medical school.

I found it interesting where the students who were accepted came from.

(I am wondering if a similar set of information can be found for those entering UF’s, FSU’s, and USF’s medical schools?)

UCF can’t compete with UF in terms of research opportunities, program prestige, or national brand recognition. I can’t think of anything that UCF even comes close to UF in, academically speaking. Being a part of the gator nation will open doors for you that will never be available to UCF grads in terms of networking. The UF vs. UCF question is a no brainer. UF is far superior and will always be. UF is the state’s flagship university while UCF is a regional school that hardly gets any respect in florida, much less on a national level

As for UM vs. UF, the programs might be equal. I would chose UF and save myself 80,000 dollars over four years.

^Definitely agree!

You could go into a 7 year accelerated program at UCF/USF. You do three years undergrad at UCF (or USF) and then 4 years at USF Graduate college and get a medical degree that way in a faster time. You have to apply and be accepted to UCF honors program though, and you have to be accepted for your first year-you can’t transfer into it your sophomore year (but there aren’t any cutoff gpas so just write a good essay and resume and you should be fine). UCF just got their own medical school, but its not affiliated with the 7 year accelerated program yet. USF is supposed to have a very good med program, and if you want to pay Florida resident tuition and skip a year of costs it could be a good option for you. If you want a more prestigious program for your undergraduate or graduate degree, go with UF or UM like the rest of the people say, but its whatever you value more. I’m not premed or anything, I just know these things because a representative came from UCF to my school and explained it.

I would not consider the UCF med school simply because it is young and unproven
When it comes to medicine I would pick UM over UF because of the stronger program and more research opportunity at UM med over UF med
UM also offers more choices in what to study and the research being done is world class

if it’s a matter of money UM has great financial aid, I my self got 38,000 to go not including any loans
in the end graduate schools will not care where you did your pre-med
only on what you actually achieved there either school can offer great opportunities it’s what you make of them

“When it comes to medicine I would pick UM over UF because of the stronger program and more research opportunity at UM med over UF med”

What sources do you have to back up the claim that UM provides a stronger program and more research opportunity?

"in the end graduate schools will not care where you did your pre-med

Untrue. Where you went IS important to graduate schools. UF makes an application look better than a UCF applicant with the same GPA. Aside from that there’s the matter of grade inflation/deflation.

Here’s the class profile for UM’s medical school…

[2009 Class Profile | University of Miami](http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2600-1;14190-2;66081-3,00.html)

what do you guys think about FSU vs UF pre-med?

^They are mostly equivalent; though I think FSU offers better undergrad research support than UF.

For example, the last time I added up the med students at FSU they were about evenly split between FSU and UF grads, with a sprinkling of other schools.

colombianito69, take a look at what the UF College of Medicine Class of 2012 student undergrad profile looks like:

[UF College of Medicine Class of 2012 | Facebook](<a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook)

If you view the member’s list you will see that MANY students came from Harvard, Duke, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Princeton, Georgia Tech, Emory, Wake Forest, Columbia, Cornell, Tufts, Washington University, Johns Hopkins, UF, and one person from FSU. UF does an excellent job of recruiting the best students from the best universities from all over the country to form a strong, well diversified college of medicine class.

thanks, this was a typo I actually mean FSU vs UCF.

I know this is old, but to anyone reading this:

UM and UF are roughly equal in terms of the pre-med environment.

However, when it comes to research,

UF >>> UM

Look at the grad school rankings.

48 >>> #53 (difference=5) when the difference favors UF

and

38 = #58 (difference=20) when the difference favors UM

Sure, that makes sense.

I will say that if med schools are anything like law schools, they don’t care at all where you go to undergrad. Whether you go to Barry University or UC Berkeley, you’re just a number.

Notice how I said “look at the grad school rankings.”

UF for Biology: 46
UM for Biology: 82

UF for Chemistry: 36
UM for Chemistry: 94

UF for medical school: 48
UM for medical school: 53 Here I would say that they are both roughly equal, neither being noticeably better than the other.

UF Comp Sci: 39
UM Comp Sci: Unranked

UF Engineering: 35
UM Engineering: 121

UF Law: 48
UM Law: 69

UF Clinical Psychology: 37
UM Clinical Psychology: 32 Again, roughly equal.

UF Econ: 48
UM Econ: Unranked

UF History: 48
UM History: 71

UF Physics: 36
UM Physics: 122

Need I go on?

UF is superior to Miami for research. Miami has a strong and small undergraduate class, which contributes to their good ranking, but UF also has many strong students, and although its ranking is hampered by budget cuts (which will likely improve in a few years), and large class sizes, it has much better research opportunities for undergraduate students for almost all of its programs (of course there are some exceptions, like earth sciences, for example).

You can check it out for yourself. Truthfully, the overall ranking doesn’t mean all that much, as neither of these schools have the same name brand recognition as schools like Berkeley, Cornell, Harvard, etc., but the grad school rankings are a pretty good indicator of how strong the graduate programs are, and how strong the research is at each university.

Go Gators!

Oh and by the way, Miami is a great school, but I just feel that they are still about equal, and that Miami is in no way much better than UF.

I totally agree that they’re pretty much equal. I assumed that you were referring to medical research rankings, which seems like it would be the only relevant research ranking to this thread.

Oh okay, I see.

Again, don’t get me wrong, they’re both fantastic schools, and all I’m trying to say is that the choice of one over the other comes down to personal preference.

If you’re doing engineering, go with UF. If you’re doing marine sciences/meterology, go with UM. If you’re doing medicine, go with the school you like more.
