UF ranked 2nd for best value in public colleges, again

UF ranked second for best value in public colleges

by Nathan Crabbe

The University of Florida is one of the nation’s best values in public colleges, according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

UF ranked No. 2 in Kiplinger’s February 2010 issue, which hits newsstands Tuesday. Only the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked higher.

Schools were ranked according to cost and financial aid as well as academic measures such as student-faculty ratios and admission, graduation and retention rates.

Other state universities making the list include New College of Florida at No. 12, Florida State University at No. 17, the University of Central Florida at No. 36 and the University of South Florida at No. 60.

-This is great for UF, glad to see the nation continuing to recognize why UF is such a steal in higher education for in-state residents! GO GATORS!

I find it interesting that UF is still ranked #2 even after the 15% increase in tuition cost. This goes to show that tuition is STILL too cheap for the high quality of education at UF.

Even before Bright Futures, which most students at UF easily qualify for, in-state tuition is extremely cheap.

Nice to see national recognition of value.

Is this for in-state students or OOS? I know Kiplinger splits that up…

In-State Out-of-state
5 1 State University of New York at Binghamton NY
9 2 State University of New York College at Geneseo NY
1 3 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill NC
2 4 University of Florida

When averaged out (in state and out of state ranks) UNC-2 UF-3 SUNY-Binghamton-3 SUNY-Geneseo 5. Plus there is not as much disparity between UFs In state and Out of state 2:4 as compared to SUNYBinghamton 5:1, which may lead me to believe the article represents it overall? Thats my take, I can’t find a clear cut line written about it being overall or just pertaining to in state. But I believe they got it just right :)

thank you for the clarification…

note the average level of debt at graduation for many of the public schools is greater than that for the private colleges and universities.
Range top 10 public $12,850 to $20,091 UNC $9,384
Range top 10 private $5,955 to $24,205
Range top 10 LAC $9,214 to $25,025
I also noted that many of the public colleges have lower graduation rates in comparison to the privates.
It would be interesting to see a combined ranking!

appdad, that’s because of the endowments used for scholarships at private. They offer much better finaid packages then states schools to OOS students.
