UF SSTP 2017

Fyi

University of Florida Student Science Training Program (UF SSTP) for the 2017 summer:

“notification of application status will likely begin March 1st. All notifications will be done by email”

I just got my acceptance email!

I just got my acceptance email! I have no experience in computer science, but I did do microbio research at my local hospital. Other than that, I had no other “research experience”.

Feel free to ask me any questions. I attended last year. Congratulations.

Me too!

I attended this program and loved it.

I received my acceptance on Monday! I can’t wait to attend.

I also received my acceptance email on Monday! I did not have any experience doing research but have taken many AP classes related to the research areas I am interested in.

Got mine a couple days ago! So excited!

@globalchemist @zenith88 @highschooltoMD @eg314159 would any of you guys mind sharing your stats? I submitted my application a few days ago (pretty late) and would like to know how I look among the application pool

What kind of stats would you like to know? @talkingtrees

@globalchemist anything you’re willing to give  For example, GPA/grades or some of the activities you listed in the application? Congrats by the way!

Ok. For my extracurriculars, I specifically on my resume other summer programs I have joined over the past couple years, such as a job shadowing program and another disection based club. I have decent grades and fully dual enrolled on a college campus. I also mentioned my work and the sports I am involved with. I was nervous about not knowing a programming language when it asked on the application, but luckily im in! Good luck to you!

Some of the activities that I listed in the application were science clubs that I am a member and president of, my 100+ hours of volunteering at a local hospital, and a pediatric related organization that I founded. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.5 weighted GPA. I have taken 7 science classes and 6 AP classes. All of my other core classes were honors. Good luck! I hope to see you there. @talkingtrees

I’ve taken 5 AP/IB classes and I’m taking 7 AP/IB right now. I have a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.7 weighted. I mentioned my previous research experiences, my hospital volunteering hours, my awards at state science fair, my extracurriculars (such as tennis), the two programs that I started at my school (for leadership), and my writing that was published. Good luck and I hope to see you this summer  @talkingtrees

I created a thread (Accepted University of Florida Student Science Training Program (UF SSTP) Students 2017) for those who have been accepted so that we can talk btw!

I’m considering applying for UF SSTP, and I’m wondering how much past experience you need to have with the different research areas to get into them and do well in them? I want to apply for the Comp Sci research area, but I only have a very basic understanding of Java (I’ve taken a beginners course)–do you need to have taken AP Comp Sci and have had lots of programming experience?

Any insight regarding the necessity of past experience for any of the research areas is greatly appreciated!

@zenith88 @highschooltoMD @globalchemist thanks so much for your responses guys  congrats and hopefully i will be seeing you guys in the summer!

Does anyone know how many people applied this year? I saw in the FAQ page that only 90 were admitted from past years.
