Do you know what Summer B is? I was accepted to the 2018 Summer B freshman class, and I’d like some clarification on what exactly that is. Thanks! :)

Hows the food:

The food depends on the place. A lot of people like to go to the Food Court in the Reitz Union and to the Hub. We have Moe’s, BK, Panda Express, Pollo Tropical, Starbucks, HomeZone, Subway, POD Market, and Chick Fill A. The Dining Halls are Gator Corner and Broward Fresh Food Company ( both renovated recently), food quality depends on the day you go, some days it’s bad but some days it’s good. They always have pizza, a salad bar, ice cream, coffee, and omelets.

How’s the campus:

I think it’s an amazing campus, pretty safe (we have our own police and they are always patrolling around). There is always something to do. A lot of organizations meet in Turlington Plaza and the Reitz (which is being renovated now) during the day. I like it. Buses are always running during the day and many at night so transportation around campus and off campus is not bad. You will have time to see this during Preview.

How’s the dorms
http://www.housing.ufl.edu/undergrad/choices/</a>
I can’t say too much because I have only lived in two of them. In my opinion Springs is the best, and Keys later (Keys is not for freshmen, only sophomores and above). Lakeside is pretty good but it’s far so it depends on the student. Springs has suites where two people live, they share a bathroom with another suite so 4 people per bathroom. It also has single rooms but I think freshmen are not allowed to have those. Most of the dorms have communal bathrooms which are shared by everyone in one floor. Once again, it depends on the person’s opinion but overall we have good dorms. They are more expensive than living off campus so keep that in mind. Most people live their first year on campus and move out the next.

How’s the girls

:)) I will not comment on this, you will see when you come for Preview. However, our pep song “We Are the Boys from Old Florida” says that our girls are the fairest… ;)

Are there a lot of gay people

As with any American university, the LGBT community is part of the university but I don’t know why this would matter to anyone nowadays…

How’s the overall feel of the school

The school has a great feel, specially during football season. In my four years I haven’t heard anyone complain about the school life because there is ALWAYS something to do.

How’s the nightlife:

Nightlife is good. There are a lot of bars and clubs close to campus on University Ave. I can’t tell you much about this because I don’t go out too much.

Do you need Greek to have fun:

You definitely don’t need to be Greek to have fun. There are more than 900 organizations so I am sure there is one that combines all you are looking for.

Do you know what Summer B is? I was accepted to the 2018 Summer B freshman class, and I’d like some clarification on what exactly that is.

Summer in UF is divided in, let’s say, three parts… Summer A is from the beginning of May until the end of June. Summer B begins at the end of June and ends in the second week of August. Overall, Summer A and B are made of 6 weeks each. Then we have Summer C which is the whole summer (the beginning of Summer A to the end of B). If you were accepted to Summer B, be happy. You will get acquainted to the campus while there are not many people taking classes plus you will be ahead of those who begin in Fall in terms of credits; it will be more relaxed as the campus gets a bit hectic during the day in Fall and Spring. However, if you don’t like the idea of beginning on Summer B you can send a request to the Admissions Office and they will honor it if people that were accepted to Fall decide not to come.

What is your opinion of Sledd Hall, Fletcher Hall and Simpson Hall? At this point, I’m pretty sure those will be my 3 dorm picks. I love Sledd and Fletcher’s architecture, but I know Simpson was recently renovated. I’m not that social, so I knew Broward and Rawlings were out of the question, but I’d like to know your opinion. How hard is it to get around on a bicycle? Also, are meal plans required for certain dorms? Thanks!

@arrozconleche (love the username btw!) I am sorry but I can’t comment on those as I have not lived there nor I don’t know anyone who lives there, what I can tell is to make sure the hall you choose has A/C because some of them don’t given that they are historic sites (I think Buckman and Thomas). Bikes are used all around campus, there are bike racks everywhere. Just make sure you have a strong lock (preferably U-lock), have lights (you will get fined at night if you don’t) and that you register it in case it gets stolen. As far as I know meal plans are not required. Many if not all of our dorms have lounges with kitchens where you can cook if you want to…

MODERATOR NOTE:

CCs policy is to not have single-member threads as it deters all members from contributing and expressing different POVs.

The thread has been changed to Ask Us, to include all that wish to participate.

Members asking questions, please be aware that questions can sometimes be buried in an extended, multi-topic thread. Often using the New Discussion button to ask a question is more useful to the OP and to others using the Search function to find specific topics.

Thank you @Ir2010

The question was for my gay friend who was wondering if their was an active gay scene.

No problem. UF is fine about it, no hate or anything weird towards gays. Tell you friend not to worry. :)

Thanks

@lr2010 Thanks for the info  I know that Sledd and Fletcher do have A.C., thank God. Do you know if the kitchens have a common refrigerator, or do you have to bring your own mini fridge? How bad is the weather there now? How bad can the weather get (in terms of cold and heat)? I live in south Florida, so it’s pretty balmy most of the time, unless it’s the summer, in which it gets really hot. Also, when I was referring to bikes, I meant whether it was practical to get around on a bike, or whether I should just have a car.

As for the username, thanks! It’s one of my favorite desserts, and it reflects my Hispanic heritage.

I doubt they have refrigerators, you should check but I am pretty sure they don’t. In any case, almost everyone (me included) buys/brings a minifridge when they come here. In terms of weather, Gainesville can have the worst of both worlds. In summer it’s super hot, like Miami-type hot (although Miami is more humid), and winter can be really cold too. This winter was really cold, all of our smartphones said that it was snowing :P. Some years it seems that winter is not as bad (my junior and sophomore years weren’t that bad in winter). You should either get a bike or a scooter because car parking on campus is horrible. They have a decal system that I’ve heard is expensive and when there are football games the parking situation gets worst. So you should have a car if you live off-campus to get around although I think after 6 pm you can park anywhere on campus. That being said, plenty of people survive their college years here with public transportation which in my opinion is pretty good and free for UF students. Many app complexes are close to bus stops if you decide to live off campus. Also, there are many on campus routes that are constantly running during the day. As a tip, when you come, download the bus tracking app if you have a smartphone so you know when the bus is coming ;)

Thank you!! As a matter of fact, I will do that right now, since I’m travelling to Gainseville tomorrow at noon, so I’ll arrive in the evening, and I’ll tour UF on Wednesday. I know I’ll live on campus for sure (FL prepaid), so one of my goals when I tour it on Wednesday is to visit the housing halls.

I haven’t applied for housing yet…
Will UF run out of dorms for freshman?

Is applying to the honors college worth it?

@gtownbound It depends on how many students (sophomore and above) decide to return to stay on campus. UF actually just began to build a new dorm (which you should be ready by Fall 2015) to fix or at least alleviate this problem. If you have a contract I think that you are guaranteed to have a spot on campus. if you have more questions about this just contact Housing…

@readmypost IN MY OPINION, aside from getting to register for classes before everyone else (a good thing when you are are freshmen/sophomore) and putting it on your resume, I don’t see a point on being an honor student. I never hear people talk about the Honor’s program.

Not for Freshman, if you sign up in time. However, if you’re late, you may get stuck into a temporary triple, or find yourself without a slot.
