TALLAHASSEE - For Tim Tebow, the usual crush of autograph-seeking fans was replaced Thursday by a crush of Florida lawmakers and Gov. Charlie Crist.

They crowded around the Gators' Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback on the House and Senate floors, seeking his autograph on University of Florida hats, helmets, pennants and footballs. They posed for pictures with him. The House speaker, a UF graduate, doffed his jacket and successfully caught two of three passes from the powerful left-hander on the House floor.

Tebow met with the governor, who was briefly a collegiate quarterback himself.

"I told him I was extremely proud of him winning the Heisman trophy but just as much if not more so for the comments he made after he received it, you know, talking about his faith and family and how much it means to try to lead a good life,'' Crist said. "This young man, this great Floridian, does that.''

Tebow, a 20-year-old who in December became the first sophomore to win the Heisman, won praise from state leaders for his work both on and off the football field. As an example of his character they cited his efforts as a missionary in the Philippines, where he has worked with orphanages.

"What a guy,'' said state Sen. Steve Wise, who attends the same Baptist church as Tebow's parents in Jacksonville.

The Senate honored him with a resolution and a "medallion of excellence,'' which is the Senate's highest honor for a Florida citizen.

Tebow became the third Floridian to be honored on the Senate floor with the medal, which was initiated last year.
