UF transfer, please please help!

I just called UF today to see about transferring. A little background: I am in my second semester freshman year at the University of Tampa. By the end of this semester I will have 53 credits (I came in with 20 from high school, so technically I’m a sophomore). I finished my first semester with a 3.88 GPA. I was planning on taking 2 courses over the summer to get the required 60 credits needed to apply to transfer to UF. However, when I spoke to the UF college of business (I am a finance major) they said that there were prerequisite classes to get into the business college 4 or 5 of which I haven’t taken (depending on if they accept my business calculus as calculus). The rest of the classes are: statistics, introduction to computers, financial accounting, and managerial accounting. That’s 16-20 credit hours which is way more than I could take in the summer but I really wanted to transfer for Fall 2015. I asked if I could take the classes at UF and then move into the business school but it didn’t sound like I could. What are my options? I’m worried that I won’t have the required GPA to transfer anymore because those classes sound so hard. I don’t understand how I can’t transfer because I will have 60 credits by the time I apply. I could take one or two of the required classes over the summer. Any advice is reallllly welcome.

You talked to the business college, but did you talk to the actual admissions counselors? To me, it seems like you would actually apply under pre-business for undergrad. The business college itself may actually be for graduate students and the person you spoke with may have thought you were looking into their grad program.

Clarify with the office of admissions on whether you are a candidate for admission.

I looked at their page for Warrington and I found this: http://warrington.ufl.edu/undergraduate/academics/admissions.asp
It seems as though I should be able to transfer if I take financial accounting and one more course over the Summer. I emailed the woman in charge of transfer business students but any advice is welcome!

I curious. Why did you go to University of Tampa instead of the cheaper option of a Florida Community College, which guarantee that you would get into one of the Florida 4-year Institution after getting your AA Degree? U of T is very expensive when compare to a Community College. You could do Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Computer Literacy and Statistics over the Summer at a Community College using both in-class and Online Courses - (ACG2021 Introduction to Financial Accounting, ACG2071 Managerial Accounting, CGS1060 Computer Literacy, STA2023 Statistics)

I was accepted to UF as a freshman, decided I couldn’t handle such a big school and thought I’d stay at Tampa all 4 years. But I realize that was a mistake because UF is better ranked and more well known. I can’t transfer with less than 7 credits unless I’m a General business studies major which means I can’t be a finance major. So I don’t really know what to do. Is a BABA general studies degree from UF good?

Also, if anyone could tell me how hard it is to get into UF as a transfer student, that would be great!

I don’t understand the significance of “how hard it is to get into UF”. What difference does it make? They clearly stated on the Website that it is very competitive to get into any of their business programs as a transfer student. IMHO, you are at a disadvantage coming in from a Private 4-year University. UF and any of the other 4-year Florida Universities tend to give Community College Transfers a preference (so I have been told). You could complete the remainder of your Prerequisites at a Community College in the Summer and Fall of 2015 and try to get into UF in the Spring of 2016. I think you might need to complete 15 credits (a quarter of the 60 credit requirement) at the Community College (CC) in order to get an AA Degree from that CC.

Do you currently live at home or live in the Tampa area full-time? What about University of South Florida (USF) Business Program? Also, I think FAU has a well respected Business Program (Accounting). These State Universities are a hell of a lot cheaper than University of Tampa ($26,330 - Tuition & Fees only) and certainly better known. I cannot give an opinion on UF BABA Program. I know for a fact that their Accounting Degree Students are well sought after.

BTW, those 7 UF Business Prerequisite courses are not that difficult. Maybe some students might find the Business Calculus class a bit challenging.

I live in the Tampa area. If I don’t get into UF I don’t plan on transferring. UT is well respected within the Tampa community, but is not as well known which is why I wanted to transfer. I wasn’t ready to start college at UF because it is huge, I wanted to wait and then transfer over.

You know you have contradicted yourself. First you said you wanted complete the 4 years at the University of Tampa after deciding that UF was just to large an institution and now you said that you wanted to wait and then transfer over. Since you are not making sense, I will wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. BTW, I live in Florida and I have never heard of the University of Tampa. Good luck getting a job from any company outside of Tampa!

First, you’ll do fine at University of Tampa…getting into UF is a nice to have but not a must have.

The BABA general studies degree at UF is good, but it’s not a Finance degree.

Some numbers on last years transfers:

Accounting: 196 Applications, 18 Admits, 11 Enrolled
Business Admin: 1,447 Applications, 388 Admits, 337 Enrolled.

If you’re not admitted as a Freshman, then you have to meet the transfer requirements and that means taking the prerequisite classes. UF School of Business is very competitive, but on the other hand, if you get in it’s well worth it. If the prerequisite classes also can be used toward your degree at U-Tampa, then you’re not be wasting your time.

Good Luck!

FYI: Another option is getting your BS at U-Tampa and then your MS in Finance at UF (graduate school at UF has a much higher acceptance rate)…just a thought.

@Psata82 your rudeness is not necessary.
@Gator88NE Thank you! I definitely appreciate your advice. Those are extremely competitive numbers so I imagine I won’t be able to get in. If I transferred to Santa Fe and took my prerequisites would I be more likely to be accepted?

Perhaps, but I would hate for you to transfer to Gainesville, only to find out you can’t get in. However, if you keep your GPA high and met the prerequisites, I’m sure you’ll get accepted to the BABA program.

I’m not sure how much of an advantage Santa Fe would have over U-Tampa. However, Santa Fe is setup to transfer students to UF, and it would have all of the required prerequisite courses available.

@Gator88NE‌ Is the BABA program worth it? I heard that most companies prefer people who have a specialized area in business rather (such as finance) than just general business. So would a BABA from UF be worth more than a finance degree from U. Tampa? I just feel really stupid for turning down UF when I got in the first time, even though I didn’t feel ready to be at such a large school yet so now I’m stressing out!

Don’t stress, you can be successful with either degree. As a private school, U Tampa does have it’s advantages, and you knew if you where ready for UF or not.

Take a closer look at the BABA program and determine if this is something you would do, rather than getting a BS in Finance. While it’s a “general” degree, it does require that you specialize. There is also a section on “Internships and Career Outlook”.

@Gator88NE thank you so much for all of your help! I’m super grateful

If I were you I would take however many of those required classes as I can and apply anyway. The worse they could do is deny you. As stated above, you could always try for Spring 2016. However, if you plan on graduate school, then it won’t matter where you went for undergrad! Also, ignore the rude poster above as I’m sure you will do just fine outside of Tampa. A BS in Finance is a great degree to have.

@fallenwinter Thank you so much! I really appreciate it

I just have a question. does anyone know what it means when they say “Must typically have a minimum 2.75 GPA on all attempts of these courses to be competitive.” does that mean if I got a C on one of those courses on my first attempt and an A on the second attempt I still wouldn’t be competitive? Sorry if this is unrelated.
