So when I toured UF I saw that most people either walked, rode a bike, or (saw most of this) rode a Moped to get around campus. There where also the buses
Cars were barely used. I do like the idea of getting around on a Moped, but what would be the best?

For motorcycles you have to buy a decal for parking inside campus, however, all buses are free for students and they are fast.

It really depends on where you live. The majority of the people I know ride the bus. A car isn’t really an option if you live off campus simply because you’d have to park way far, then ride the bus anyway. If you ride a motorcycle or scooter, you can get a decal to park on campus, but then sometimes you have to content with the elements. And potentially deal with a helmet all day.

Do people who live in faraway dorms take the bus to get to class? I have a car also so I’m wondering if it’s just gonna sit in the parking lot all day or will I get to use it?

Oh thanks guys! I was under the impression that you had to pay for the Bus.

But I was thinking the same thing Alleviate. Do you pay parking decal to have your car just basically sit there until you actually use it to leave campus?

Yes bee579 that is the way it works. Your decal with you permission to park in student parking which during the week is near Hume hall. On the weekends you can park closer to your dorm IF you find a spot. Someone please correct me IF I am wrong.

My son will be taking his car. Becuase he is going to join the Gator Sailing Team and will need to drive to Lake Wauberg for practice.

I think you got it backwards. The parking lot near Hume is the commuter lot, for students who live off campus. there is a parking lot for red, the freshman decal, near most of the freshman dorms, and you can park there whenever, but I know on football game days, in some parking lots you have to move your car for the tailgaters, but I don’t know which lots that is. They send an email before every game. Bringing a car is really only so that you can go off campus or home. there aren’t even any parking lots near where the classes are. I don’t have a car now, but I am definitely bringing one next year. the buses barely run on the weekends, and it is a serious pain trying to lug stuff back from walmart on the bus. Also, I would rather drive myself home than take the bus services, just for the convenience of leaving whenever you want and being able to take as much stuff back and forth as I want, instead having to stuff everything into 1 or 2 bags.

besides that, I would strongly recommend bringing a bike. because of the hills, it is sort of a pain in the butt getting from some dorms to the classes, but a bike can turn the 15-20 minute walk back into a 3 minute coast.

glasswright yes u r correct my bad. I wonder if they limit the red decals to first come first serve basis per dorm location?

no, they give out decals based on number of UF credits. you can go onto the UF transoportation website to see where all the parking lots are and what decals they are for. I think red is for 50 UF credits and below. and you can park anywhere there is a sign saying red decals.

The only people I ever saw riding mopeds were athletes for some reason. I had no problem walking anywhere I needed to in about 15 minutes. Yes, sometimes I had class where I had to walk from NPB to Matherly, but I don’t recall ever being more than a minute or two late.

gator4ever, don’t be so quick to say you’re wrong… you’re not. THe majority of freshmen parking IS next to hume, it’s not the giant commuter lot, it’s the lot between Hume and Graham and the parking garage next to Hume. The only other freshmen parking is a tiny lot across 13th (so, far) or all the way out by the gym (really far). So yes, your parking decal is simply to let your car sit on campus, in order to drive to off campus locations.

So, as a freshman, you will get RED3 parking, which is only in terrible locations, mostly by hume.

so what decal is the parking lot in front of beaty towers and behind reed, next to 13th? I though that was also red?

Were you looking at the map? If so, by in front of I’m going to assume you mean behind beatty (southward) which would be RED1 parking. It’s red, but it’s red for people with more credit hours then freshmen. Freshmen get RED3, after that you get RED1.

no, I meant the one across the street from beaty. I wasn’t looking at the map, I just pass by it everyday, and assumed it was red, turns out it is orange. I have friends that park there, and I guess they just never get caught for having the wrong decal, lol. its hard to see it on the map, to the east of Broward Beach. I know what all the decals are.

The only red 3 parking by the beaty area is in the parking garage by sorority row.

Maybe they parked there after hours because I know parking patrol are a little too diligent at their job at UF.

Yea, I find it unlikely they parked there during the day without getting caught, parking patrol is almost 100% on point. They even check into the details of the permits (My friend got booted for using somebody else’s parking permit). They probably parked there in the evenings or weekends, when its allowed. Orange is for professors so there’s no need to enforce it nights and weekends. The exception is the police station (for obvious reasons).

no, they were definitely parked there in the middle of the day during the week. I don’t know how they didn’t get caught for it.

I’m nervous about the freshman parking though, because from what the tour guides said, it can be a bit too hectic. One of them told us that she nearly got hit

My car got hit TWICE while parked during the year I had it parked in the big parking lot by Hume. Parking is indeed very hectic though; I would often have to drive back to campus at weird times after weekends away in order to get a space within a half mile of my dorm.
