I am going into senior year and am very interested in both. I am from new york. I am interested in majoring in business, specifically real estate but that may change. I love both universities but I am really undecided. I ranking wise Miami is better, but I heard that people were not as friendly. I don't know. Help.

Whether or not you think the people are friendly is entirely subjective, I doubt my opinion or anyone else’s will be of much help. For what it’s worth, UF’s Warrington is better ranked than UMiami’s business school. Since you are out of state I don’t think there would be a significant difference in cost.

UF is a huge university located in a relatively small city, to the point that a fair amount of Gainesville basically is UF. University of Miami is only about 1/5th the size of UF, and is located in the largest metro area in south. So, while I haven’t been there, I doubt it has the same “feel” as living in Gainesville.

On the other hand, if you are really interested in real estate, Miami might be a better place to be in.

But really, if I were you I’d try to visit both schools. If you can, fly down for a couple days and visit both schools, that’s the best way for you to determine which will be a good fit for you.

Thank you. Well maybe the friendly thing I have to decide for myself. But I guess I will have to visit to decide, thanks.

As for the comparing UF to UM in aspects other than scholasticly (ie campus size, campus appearance, people, social scene), it is like comparing apples to carrots. They are soooo different. Just go where you feel happier. You can determine that by visiting. I know that in my case I didn’t like UM because the people seemed snobbish and cold, and the campus seemed drab. But I’m sure others feel welcomed and fall in love with the campus. It all depends on YOU.

UF is better for business ranking-wise, but the difference is close enough for you to choose based on personal preference. If you like college towns, go to UF. If you like Miami, then obviously UM.

Ok. I am visiting both soon. Is it a disadvantage to go to such a big school, like UF. And comment on which campus you think is more updated, or “better”.

I was under the impression that UF had top-tanked real-estate business program. Maybe Miami does too.

I didn’t know that. Thank you for informing me. So academic wise it is very similar. But Uf has a better business and real state program.

Yeah, the UF Real Estate program is ranked 6th nationally per the latest US News.

Even though UM is ranked higher, I really think that UF has a better reputation… and I’m not saying that because I’m biased. It’s just really common to hear people stressing about whether they’ll get in at UF, and not as common to hear people talking about getting in to UM… but part of that, I think, might be the low price to attend UF compared to attending to UM. But this is just my honest opinion! Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. Part of this may also be attributed to the area of Florida I’m from, too…

UF is more well known and stronger in research, as revealed by their US news graduate school rankings. Miami offers a more intimate undergraduate learning experience, and is a great school overall. For pre-med, both are equal. For engineering, UF is superior. For marine biology, Miami is where it’s at.

It may cost significantly more to attend UM unless you get substantial scholarship money.

Gouf- The OP is from NY- meaning that his COA at UF will be substantial- although I am not sure how much cheaper (if at all) than Miami.

@UFhopeful- As far as people stressing about getting into UF- it would make sense that the in-state kids you know would want to get in at UF. In my own child’s case, Florida prepaid, plus Bright Futures makes the financial aspect more doable. Getting a 1/2 scholarship at UMiami still means having to pay $20,000./yr in addition to housing. Financially, UF makes more sense for in-state students who have good stats.

40-50K at UM vs 30K at UF OOS

I live in Miami and I go to UF, but only to experience college town/life but if I were Gainesville native I would come to Miami and go to UM there’s a lot more things to do in Miami by a mile.

UM UF business I would almost rank at par just because overall UM is now ranked 37 whereas UF is 58 in general but Both are great school though even though the now heavener school of business is ranked better than UM’s.

Don’t go with rankings so much as long as your in a tier 1 school you’ll be fine.

Also costs will be higher at UM another reason I didn’t attend.

In terms of lay prestige, UF has the edge among Floridians. Outside of Florida, at least in the Northeastern US, it seems like the opposite is true, possibly due to the large number of well-to-do NY/NJ kids that come down to study at UMiami. UF tends to be mostly in-state kids due to Florida requirements that limit OOS students.

Hi, hopefully I can provide a bit of insight considering that this past April I was picking between both of those schools. I eventually decided on UF… perhaps because I wanted to get away from Miami (where I live now) and experience something new, but also I much prefer the UF campus as well as the obvious price tag. Both schools are into partying… Also you want to consider your class size… you’re much more of a number at UF than at UM but I’d say that you have a lot more “diverse” opportunities at UF… there’s anything that you’d EVER want to do at UF. Keep in mind when comparing costs that UM gives a lot of scholarships. I got an 11k scholarship and barely any financial aid from UM… if you received something similar, both UF and UM would be the same price from someone OOS (check if you qualify for the scholarships based on your GPA/SAT/ACT scores). Think about what environment you want to be in… a huge city or a college town? UM is in Coral Gables which to me, for someone who lives in Downtown is no South Beach, or the ‘Miami’ that you’d imagine in your head, but it’s easy to get around if you have a car. On the other hand, I’m not bringing a car to UF… the campus is centered around everything you’d want. I agree with posters above that you should really check out both schools but remember to not focus your beliefs on a single visit - there’s no way it will really depict the rest of your college experience in my own opinion. Anyway, don’t try to focus too much on picking before you actually get in… it might end up being an easier choice than you thought. Good luck with your applications. :)
