As I originally posted, I can’t understand why UM is discussed on the UF thread, but if we must. ladistar if by “academic standards” you’re speaking of SATs, I believe they are the same except for the 25% percentile, UM is just 10 points higher (too lazy to look up the number).

A good number enter UM as science majors probably pre-med hopefuls. A letter was sent home to parents stating that of the 10,000 apps for the 1000 spots in the School of Arts and Sciences the average SAT was 1300 and 1/3 were biology majors followed by psychology as the next popular major.

Basic scholarships:

Actually the 3/4 scholarship brings the cost of UM lower than UF for us. But we also have prepaid, a measly $2400 and bright futures is $4032. There are other grants and scholarships besides the FRAG. Last year my child was “over-awarded” and they took away “work study.”

If my children didn’t get scholarships, they would not be at UM. Though they are very happy there and enjoying every moment. They feel they made the right decision.

What makes you think the undergrad education is superior at UF? There are good and bad professors everywhere. One thing that UM has is small classes, 100% of classes taught by professors-no TAs. No online classes and much to the dismay of my DD no fluff classes.

In the future, if Miami surpasses UF in the rankings, people on this board will say rankings are bogus and meaningless.
