I have to agree. As a matter of fact, I am confident that anyone could get as much as he/she wants from Miami Dade College, which is the largest community college in the country. I really think that as long as the student is motivated and dedicated he can really reach his potential

To add to your knowledge about my high school, one fourth of the students are on at least a half scholarship. We give out more scholarship money than any other school in the state.

As for the people that do go and pay 10,000 a year, I don’t blame them at all but I won’t go into why my high school is better than the two you mentioned.

Sincerely,
Hypocrite

Well, I am sorry to have ruffled your feathers, vincanity1. I really do not judge nor criticize people for what they pay for a school. I am glad that your parents can afford it. I have a lot of friends that would have loved to go there, but they had to settle for Palmetto. Good thing it is a good public school… like UF.

Perhaps you should stop bashing UM about their fees. Yours is the most expensive all boys school in the area.

To add to your knowledge about my high school, one fourth of the students are on at least a half scholarship. We give out more scholarship money than any other school in the state.

^ I thought I made that clear. If your friends would’ve been admitted to the school and approached the administration about it, they would have been given a full scholarship no questions asked. Don’t bother disputing that because most of my friends went through just that.

At least know what you’re talking about

I know what I am talking about. YOURS is the most expensive ALL BOYS SCHOOL in the area. So much about preaching about UM being too expensive.

Theres no point staring ignorance in the face.

Hey anybody on this post that goes to a public school up to copy and pasting the facts ive posted on UM? maybe a link to collegeboard

Dude, do you get it? Your point has been all along that UM is not worth the expense because one can get a “better” undergraduate education at UF. YET, you happen to go to the most expensive ALL BOYS SCHOOL in South Florida. My point is that people sometimes have a preference of a school over another one, regardless of the money, because others factors become more relevant or important to them.

I understand why someone would choose to go to a more expensive school, just like YOU chose to do. There are several higher ranked nationally known public high schools in the city, YET, you chose to go to the MOST expensive private one, which to some people is of “lesser” quality. This would make your OWN argument invalid. Don’t the jesuits teach you how to debate?

I’m not going to “debate” with you when you choose to only recognize pieces of my argument. You have repeated the same thing several times and have neglected to realize what I am trying to say. I’m just going to stop bothering with you. Hopefully u can get your kicks debating with a grown up dude.

To every one else, I apologize for making this about something other than UF. I mean that sincerely

Would that be Belen Jesuit or C. Columbus? I know some guys here that went to those schools.

I’m a Columbus grad, currently a freshman at UF…
In my opinion, I think both are excellent and well-respected schools and I think they are very comparable in the undergraduate level. Both schools are making great strides in increasing their undergraduate programs as Donna Shalala and Bernard Machen are actively seeking to do so. Graduate wise, the rankings clearly show UF has better programs than UM, however, as someone on the thread said, what you get out of a program is directly related to what you put into it, no matter where you are.

Yea ASMAJ, I posted that I go to Belen in another thread and he stumbled upon it

The last thing I will say on the UF UM issue is that I completely agree with dre229’s point about what you get out of your school. However, my only qualm lies in how ridiculously overpriced UM is. This does not stem from my want to go there, it just upsets me that good friends have had dreams of attending for several years and while they can get in, they are going to have a very tough time paying. Not to mention it adds applicants and commits to UF

serchingon:
"Miami has a beautiful campus and the city has become more, and more cosmopolitan. These two factors are a major advantage over Gainesville. The fact remains, UF does not not have a big name nor a big following and unfortunately is very underrated. The top students from South Florida either go to UMiami, or leave the state to attend other top rated universities. Those who go to UF is sadly, because they just can not afford UM, whihc is very expensive.

You can argue all you want about the quality of UF undergraduate education, however, if you look at Princeton Review’ Rankings, you do not get very good feed back about the school from their own students.( reputation as a party school, jock school with horrible dorms in a lousy college town )

So there are a bunch of rich kids in Miami, so what? For those of you that like to look at rankings so much, USNews listed UF only two slots above Miami, which means NOTHING."

I was born and raised in Miami Beach and can attest that the majority of UM students are either locals who allow the community to define their social lives (preferable ethnic demographic, nightlife, friends and whatnot), out-of-staters who simply want to be a part of the South Beach frenzy, and/or rich kids who couldn’t get into any prestigious schools yet have the networks to buy their way into the university.

Initially I had no idea how to respond to your assertion that UF doesn’t have a “name” or a “following”. There is no other university in Florida, and very few state universities in the country, that have as much tradition and pride as UF.

As for UF being “underrated”, I’m really curious about where you get this information because this is news to me. Last time I checked UF was the most selective university in Florida, followed by FSU and, I hear that due to their climbing academic standards, UCF. Who underates UF???

“Who underates UF???”

UF’s Peer Assessment score is only a (3.6). Northern & Mid-Western Administrators have no idea how UF has literally exploded in terms of quality, research, and excellence.

Shoot half of the people filling out the rankings do not even know how to check their email, much less how to google the research about UF’s growth. These guys are stuck in a 1960’s mindframe, and will take about a decade for the new blood to trickle in.

I hear ya. I had to look up what a “peer assessment score” is and found that it’s the score given to a university by the administrations of comparable schools. That seems astonishingly pointless in terms of assessing a university’s rank, prestige and overall enjoyability. Besides, serchingon was reffering to UF’s being underrated amongst prospective college students (not administrators) to support his claim that UF students are people who couldn’t afford to attend UM, which is one of the most asinine statements I’ve ever heard in a college related discussion.
