UF vs. Emory

I'm currently deciding between UF Honors and Emory right now and am having a tough time. I'm planning on being a pre-med, but not sure about the major yet.

I feel like Emory is a better fit, but it is a bit more expensive. I received full tuition, but still have to pay about 13,000 per year, which is not bad at all. I'd pay a little less if I went to UF. Also, with Emory, I'd be going on Financial Aid, whereas with UF I'd have mostly Merit Aid. So if my family's financial situation improves, I'm sure Emory will take most of that aid money away.

Basically, I want to know figure out if it's worth the possibility of taking out many loans to go to Emory, since my family's income may increase this year. Everyone I know has said Emory is the best choice, but I'd like to know if it's really worth it compared to UF Honors for pre-med. Is it much more competitive? And how are their medical school acceptance rates?

From what I hear, Emory has a tough curriculum and is kind of competitive. However, if you actually stick with premed all four years you’ll be well off. Of course UF is probably relaxed (at least compared to Emory).

I have heard from others that it is not cutthroat at all and easy to make A’s at Emory. In my opinion, if you truly like Emory, you should go there. If you go to Emory, what would you miss from UF? If you went to UF, what would you miss if you had gone to Emory?

I think Emory has a good med school acceptance rate for the people who don’t change majors. If you are absolutely certain about being a doctor, go for Emory.

I think there are 2 financial questions you need to have very clear answers for before you make this decision.

How much are you going to be paying out-of-pocket each year for UF vs. Emory?

How much are you going to owe in loans at the end of 4 years for UF vs. Emory?

It is my opinion that while a degree from Emory has more value than a degree from UF that that value is limited. You need to decide for yourself how much more that degree is worth.

As for UF’s honors college, I wasn’t sold. Of all the schools I visited (six), UF’s honors college impressed me the least. Other than getting to sign up for classes early (which (a) is great and (b) something all honors colleges seem to do) it didn’t look like there was much value to it.

But don’t let the name/prestige of Emory lead you down a path to a heavy loan burden at the end of your undergraduate degree. That’s a mistake too many students make.

(a cautionary tale from WSJ - [The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden - WSJ.com](<a href=“The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden - WSJ”>The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden - WSJ). Granted, she made a lot of mistakes AFTER building up $250K of debt, but she STARTED with $250K of debt. Worth it?)

As the previous poster stated really calculate how much debt you will be in from either school. You will get into medical school from either school. You don’t want to start med school with a lot of debt, because the chances of getting a scholarship to med school is slim to none, unless you are in one of the URM groups.

Thank you all so much! I really do need to sit down and get some estimates about the amount of debt I will be in.

Definitely looking into my major-- and whether it will be worth the “Emory name”. I’m also thinking about how much competition I want, and which school better fits my goals.

Thanks again :)

In my opinion, the <college name=“”> of your undergrad college is worth very little. And it’s worth absolutely nothing once you go into grad school.</college>

^You know, I find that a lot of people who throw that &^%$ around are jackasses from 2nd and 3rd tier colleges who slacked off in high school. Not saying that top 20 colleges are more superior but the constant need of 2nd and 3rd tier schools to put down top colleges is really, really <insert you-know-what=“”>. Why not man-up and just admit you weren’t good enough or show that you were indeed good enough to get into one?</insert>

^ Umm… Of all the people making claims like that, you chose to direct that at him? I’m pretty sure he got into UF and turned them down for UCF.

^I wasn’t directing at him, and UF is not top 20.
