UF vs FSU

So, I know this debate is probably starting to get a little old. But I’ve been seriously considering both UF and FSU, and I was looking for a little insight. I haven’t settled on a major yet, but I’m thinking of doubling in English with maybe Classics or Biology. I plan on going to grad school, but I’m still having trouble deciding where to go for undergrad. A couple of things I care about…

  • Class size
  • Good humanities programs (English and Classics, obviously)
  • Costs (Is UF really cheaper, some people I’ve talked to say it is?)
  • Recognition
I would appreciate any advice and any personal experiences, thanks in advance.

UF over FSU by far

The class sizes are smaller, I’d expect, at FSU. IDK about humanity majors, but even taking under-water basket weaving at UF would look good. I’m pretty sure FSU is cheaper, but you can easily find the costs of tuition on line. UF has more prestige, but they both have the same redneck alumni who bleed their school’s colors. So, there’s that.

I doubt if you’ll find a significant cost difference. As to a prestige difference it is silly to consider UF superior to Florida State as you must look at the program strengths of each.

For example:

Go to FSU for:
Actuarial science
Physics
English
Statistics
Criminology
Creative writing
Meteorology
Music
Political science
Psychology

Go to UF for:
Agriculture
Building science
Engineering

The schools are extremely close in many other areas, like chemistry, math, biology.

I suggest you visit the program areas you are interested in and then decide where you fit.

Good luck!

Really? I would say some departments at FSU are better than their UF counterparts but I don’t think the majority of classes are smaller at FSU.

I think you’re going to have a hard time comparing class sizes at both of Florida’s flagship universities - they’re both large and have large gen ed classes for the first two years, but much depends on your major…so I’m saying it’s a toss-up if class size is an issue.

By all means visit the schools and speak with the faculty in the departments that interest you. That is really the best way to see what works in my opinion.

I disagree with Parent2Noles, and I’m guessing by the handle that P2N is a little biased.

I’m a UF grad, and besides the US News rankings - UF #47 and FSU #96, UF has a top 25 undergrad business school, a top 40 Law School, top 25 Engineering School, top 5 Accounting, and a great reputation in hard sciences and liberal arts.

I was a Finance major and English minor.

As for Creative Writing, UF’s department is one of the best in the country. The MFA Creative Writing programs in poetry and fiction writing are excellent and very selective. Poetry classes have 8-15 students, and the faculty are from top MFA programs like Iowa.

Robert Frost and Donald Justice were once faculty members.

Hands down, UF is a superior university to FSU.

I don’t think there is much debate.

Ack! @HookEmGators This is an old thread, from 2012. The op hasn’t been active since 2013, and @parent2noles was last active in January and can’t really be expected to respond.

By the way, undergraduate class size and student to faculty ratios are available in the **common data set/b.

The only majors in which FSU has a clear advantage over UF are Criminology and Circus Performance.

@Zinhead I knew there was a reason clowns scare the bejeebers out of me… :O) X_X

^^^ Especially when they combine the two.
